Houston began singing at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. Hit singles from the albums, including "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", established her as a catalyst in the acceptance of black female artists on MTV. Her third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), yielded two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, the title track and "All the Man That I Need". Houston's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 received widespread media coverage.
Houston made her acting debut with the romantic thriller film The Bodyguard (1992), which despite its mixed reviews became the tenth highest-grossing film to that date. Its soundtrack won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and remains the bestselling soundtrack album of all time. It generated multiple hit singles, including "I Have Nothing", "I'm Every Woman" and "I Will Always Love You"; the latter won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, spent a then-record 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single by a woman in music history. Subsequently, she went on to star in the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996), and she recorded their respective soundtracks; the former scored her last Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", while the latter, produced by Houston herself, became the bestselling gospel album of all time. As a film producer, she produced multicultural movies and series such as Cinderella (1997) and The Princess Diaries and The Cheetah Girls.
Houston's first studio album in eight years, My Love Is Your Love (1998), spawned several hit singles, including the title track, "Heartbreak Hotel", "It's Not Right but It's Okay" and the Academy Award-winning Mariah Carey duet "When You Believe". Following the success, she renewed her contract with Arista for $100 million in 2001, one of the biggest recording deals of all time. However, her personal problems began to overshadow her career. Her 2002 studio album, Just Whitney, received mixed reviews, while her drug use and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown received widespread media coverage. After divorcing Brown, Houston returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart with her final studio album, I Look to You (2009). In February 2012, Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, with heart disease and cocaine use as contributing factors. News of her death coincided with the 2012 Grammy Awards, which took place the day following her death, and was covered internationally. Her life and career were dramatized in the 2022 biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Her assets amounted to $250 million, earned over a 25-year career.

It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be, yeah
You've been hanging round my boyfriend
You've been sayin' that he's sweet, yeah
Well girl, I know that you've been talking
Because the talk is on the street
Well, sweety you ain't gonna get that far
You're after somethin' that don't belong to you
Well, girlfriend I've got news for you
What are you trying to say Miss Thang? Huh
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
He ain't never, ever
Never, never, never, never never never never never gonna be your man
Well, I just ain't the kind of woman
To pick the fruit off of your tree, girl
And you keep saying that he's your man
But that ain't what he said to me
See he blows me kisses as he drives away
He sends me roses in the middle of the day, yeah
You think it's you that he's thinking of
But I'm the one he really, really loves girl
So what am I trying to say? Don't dis me girl
I said it isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
He ain't never, ever
Never, never, never, never gonna be you'll see
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
No it isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
He ain't never, ever
Never, never, never never gonna be your man, girl
What are you doin' layin' and hangin' back?
Don't you know it girl?
Just as I suspected
You been talkin' that la la, and that ya ya
And that yin and that yang but the man is mine, hey
He blows me kisses as he drives away
He sends me flowers in the middle of the day, yeah
You think it's you that he's thinking of
I know I'm the one that he really, really, really loves
What am I trying to say Miss It?
What are you trying to say?
Get real
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
He ain't never, ever
Never, never, never, never gonna be you'll see
It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
No it isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be
He ain't never, ever
Never, never, never gonna be your man
Be your man
Na na na na na na, na na na na na na
He is my man, of course he is
I don't think so
So now what is this?
Well, you know
That my man is supposed to be interested in you?
What can I say?
You know, I realize that you're under pressure
Yes, I am
And that you are suffering from delusions, but uh
Well
Don't be ridiculous
I'm not
Get real
You better get real
You know the deal
He told me he loves me and that I'm just his forever
Uh huh, forever
Forever
Must have played out about twenty years ago
Now check this out, ok
Number one, your man is not my man
This is true
This is true
Now, every king has his queen, yeah
And I love my role being his queen
And I hope you like yours too
Well, I'm his princess
Whatever that is
Wait, wait a minute
Okay, well, he said that I'm his princess
You might be his queen
But I'm his princess
Yeah, well, I like being the queen myself
Well, you know that's what you are
Shut up, shut up
Oh, this is funny
Whitney Houston's song "It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Nev" is a feisty response to a woman who is attempting to steal her man. Throughout the song, Houston asserts her dominance and love for her partner, while mocking the other woman's delusions. The repetition of the lyrics "it isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be" serves as a mantra for Houston's confidence in her relationship.
The song was recorded as a duet with the singer, Aretha Franklin and released in 1989. The song became a top ten hit in both the US and the UK, and it was on Houston's second album, "Whitney."
The song was one of the rare occasions when Whitney Houston shared vocals with another female artist. In the interview, Houston said that the song speaks to some of the realities of life and that she and Franklin were talent sisters who were able to come together and make magic.
