Impossible
Whitney Houston & Brandy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Impossible for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage.
Impossible for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage.
And four white mice will never be four white horses.
Such fol-de-rol and fiddle dee dee of course is
Impossible!

But the world is full of zanies and fools
Who don't believe in sensible rules
And won't believe what sensible people say
And because these daft and dewey eyed dopes

Keep building up impossible hopes impossible
Things are happening every day!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song 'Impossible' by Whitney Houston and Brandy are a commentary on the nature of human aspiration and possibility. The opening stanza sets the tone for the rest of the song by suggesting that there are many things that seem impossible at first glance. The lyrics use classic fairy tale motifs such as golden carriages, prince and country bumpkin, and white horses and mice to evoke the idea that some things in life are simply too fantastical to ever come true.

However, the song does not simply dismiss these impossible dreams out of hand. Instead, it argues that foolish and zany people who ignore sensible rules and advice are often the ones who end up achieving the impossible. The lyrics suggest that belief in the impossible is necessary for making it a reality. The chorus repeats the word 'impossible' as a kind of tongue-in-cheek refrain, suggesting that the more impossible something seems, the more likely it is to happen.

Overall, the song is a call to listeners to embrace their wildest dreams and to never give up on them, no matter how implausible they may seem. It celebrates the human capacity for imagination and refuses to accept the idea that some things are simply beyond our reach.

One of the most beautiful things about this movie was the imagery of a Black woman telling another Black woman that "it's possible". You'll never understand how powerful that is for a people that went through what Black people went through (and still to this day). The Cinderella story is inspiring in of it self. But I can image Whitney herself telling a young Brandy, yes it's a real thing! Us Black women can live our dreams too. And that they did! They were forces in their careers! They really made it!

This song is super inspiring. Seeing a black woman tell another black woman that all things are possible. So beautiful.

Skin color doesn't matter what someone tells someone. We're all human and we all bleed red. We shouldn't describe anyone as their skin color unless we're filing a police report or something. We're all the same on the inside. It's no different than 2 different skin colors one telling the opposite color things are possible.

@Maliik Prior Malik, when a black person gives admiration and highlights black excellence, don’t be so quick to SHOOT off your know-it-all mouth and lecture US about race. We’re STILL (even in this day and age) an oppressed race, so when we get a chance to point out the excellence of black accomplishments, WE WILL DO IT.

Let us have it, please and thank you. 🙄

@Maliik Prior It shouldn't matter, but in this fucked up world, it sadly does. I'd love to keep those rose-colored glasses on like you have, but in order to effect long-term change, we have to face reality. And the reality is that not everyone sees all people as equal.
