Elphaba is frustrated as to what good the spell is doing and is worried about Fiyero's safety. She is already dealing with many problems and cannot handle any more.

One question haunts and hurts too much, too much to mention: Was I really seeking good or just seeking attention? Is that all good deeds are when looked at with an ice-cold eye? If that's all good deeds are, maybe that's the reason why
Elphaba questions whether she was trying to help for the sake of doing good or just to gain attention for herself. She wonders if all good deeds are viewed as nothing more than selfishness, and if that's the case, maybe it's the reason why there are negative consequences.

All helpful urges should be circumvented
Elphaba expresses that she believes any urge to help others should be avoided to prevent negative consequences.
