Well, they did say they're adding a lot of new stuff into this story. That's why we're actually getting two movies. This one will deal with the first act of the play in which the credits will start playing right after Defying Gravity. Then we'll have to wait a year for Part 2 in which it deals with the second act of the play.

If I could chime in here, I might be able to offer some clarification on what @bluejay_7299 was referring to.
Any film based on previously existing material - and especially something as iconic and universally beloved as The Wizard of Oz - always attracts a lot of complaining nowadays. There are so many fools with too much free time on their hands that simply like to stir the pot and watch it boil over (commonly called "trolls"), but there are also a lot of people out there that have waited twenty years for this film. Their expectations will be almost impossible to meet as well.
The casting was the first of the backlash and entirely valid; whether you're an Ariana Grande fan or not, Wicked is one of the few modern Broadway musicals that instantly evoke the actresses that originated the roles onstage: Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenowith. To cast what many people see as a disposable bubblegum pop star**(see below) as one of the most iconic roles in the history of American cinema wasn't the best way to launch these films.
There's very little doubt that regardless of Cynthia Erivo's talent, having cast a young black woman as one of the leads will trigger the wrath of the same racists that threw tantrums when it was announced they'd cast Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid. The political madness we've been living in the midst of for the better part of a decade now somehow signalled that it was once again socially acceptable for the "closet racists" that had thankfully kept their mouths shut for a couple of decades bombed and boycotted everything to do with Disney and that film. They will most likely do it all over again regardless of whether the two films of Wicked become a massive success or a horrendous flop.

** - This is not my personal opinion. While I can't say I was thrilled with Ms. Grande being awarded the Glinda role, I'm keeping an open mind.

In the play, they started off Silver, then got turned into the Ruby ones by Elphaba. She enchanted her paralyzed sister Nessarose's Silver Slippers to let her walk, turning them into the Ruby Slippers, so when Dorothy gets them, they should still be Ruby, unless Nessa dying turned them back into Silver.

OMG! This looks amazing! This is the movie that I’ve been looking forward to for this year! While I haven’t seen the Broadway version (and I really want to, but I have no money lol), I have listened to the soundtrack multiple times and it is my favorite Broadway musical! Please tell me that high note is not what’s in the movie…..that is the most iconic note that leaves me in tears every time I see the play and this sounded awful. That will ruin the entire movie for everyone who worships Idina Menzels true talent. Hearing that note during the Super Bowl left me heartbroken honestly.

@@mhmyuhh I’ve seen this play on broadway more times than I can count. That note is NEVER belted with a growl like that, she’s screaming, not singing. It didn’t sound good at all and thank God I’m seeing so many others who know the art and the play l feel the same way

I have such high hopes. Wicked means the world to me. It looks great, many scenes we can tell are from the stage version but so many are new too and I can’t wait to see them! I think this will be great.
