I actually own this 12 inch single. I bought it new when I was in high school (early 80's). I used to hear it on 91X. We couldn't really get KROQ in the San Diego area, but 91X was out of Tijuana. One of the clearest signals around. It played most of what everyone says was on KROQ, and we listened day and night. Never really got into anything else by WBA. I don't think the A-side has been played more than once or twice. This song has always been one of my favorites. So melodic and flowing.

Okay, this is crazy... but this is an old cajun tune called "La Danse de Mardi Gras" recorded by the Balfa Brothers. I ran into it in the movie Serenity and I couldn't believe it. What a coincidence! Glad it's on iTunes!

KROQ was even cooler at the end of the 70s when they played stuff like Brian Eno, David Byrne, Roxy Music, early Peter Gabriel, and yes...a little DEVO now and then.

Something catchy as heck about this, all these years later.
I heard this several times on KUSF (Univ of San Francisco, college radio station). Never on KQAK (the Northern Cali version of KROQ).
My fondest memory of KQAK is when the station was sold in summer 1985, and for a few days before the new (bad, 'adult sophisti-pop') format came online, they played nothing but Brian Eno for about 96 hours.

I can't help but think that Wide Boy Awake were formed to fill a gap Jordan thought there was for all the World's End people in the early 80's, and in 81/82 there were an awful lot of them. Of course we had BowWowWow, but once McLaren ditched them and Westwood changed course someone needed to promote the clothing line and I think Jordan had it in her mind she could do this through WBA.

yes, it was the premiere "new wave" station in the US, and was eventually copied by some others across the country ... but they used to play stuff like Wide Boy Awake, Slow Children, Bow Wow Wow, etc., acts that other stations wouldn't touch. British acts like Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, The Cure, etc practically owe their US success to KROQ as they played them years before other stations. Toni Basil was also discovered by KROQ way before Mickey went national. KROQ still exists now but it sux

I've always like the story of Kevin Mooney and Wide Boy Awake and how this band formed and how he became a heroin addict and regrouped in sunny Miami. Great story great life being part of the early days of punk and Adam Ant. What format was KROQ-just moved to Los Angeles last year so was this a station in L.A.?

It was all around the time Nostalgia of Mud opened, and McLaren had yet to release Buffalo Gals & Duck Rock. Of course, Horace Carter-Allan and Lenny in WBA worked/helped out at Worlds End. (Did Vivienne ever pay anyone??) Just a thought. I liked WBA a lot, the question why 'Bona Venture' wasn't a huge commercial success still whirls round in my head to this day.

Just like kushisaac, once I heard Sex Dwarf on 106.7, the Roq of the 80's was THE ONLY thing happening. When the station was sold and sold again and the playlist became king the money trumped the music and it was over. Now they try to break 1 new artist every year or 3 through constant rotation and same 50 songs from the nineties. We still have Rodney and Jonesy though!

Fyi: i used to have a homepage site featuring info on WBA and the lyrics. I merely listened and put what I thought they said. That’s what’s out there on the web. Lyrics taken from my old site. Except for Billy Hyena and Set fighter, which had the lyrics on the 45 sleeve, it’s just my guess.

@groovedigger00 Came to LA in '81 and discovered KROQ right after coming here. WSHE in Miami where I came from was beginning to play the cars, Talking heads, lene lovich, B52's right before I left, so KROQ was a godsend. Signal sucked back then. I think the first song I heard on there was Sex Dwarf and my dial never left the station after that, until like 1985 when I started listening to KXLU out of Loyola Marymount. their signal really sucked. But KROQ was great in early 80's.

Not a KROQ wannabe at all. We didn't really receive a signal for KROQ in San Diego. 91X was the only "New Wave" station we had, and the signal was strong and clear. It was glorious! If it was playing to the same audience in LA, it may have seemed like a wannabe, but it was the only game in town for us. There was, of course, KGB 101.5 (still here, actually), but they've always been classic rock. Nothing wrong with that, but it was a new time in music for sure.
