I’ve listened carefully to dozens of recordings of this. I am pressed to think of one that avoids so utterly the trap of competition among the singers. Both maintain a perfect pianissimo throughout and the slower-than-usual tempo only serves to highlight the prayer-quality of it.

This brings tears to my eyes. I remember hearing this version in preparing for the production of Hansel and Gretel that I was in (children’s ensemble) at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2012. I have since stopped singing professionally and I miss it terribly. This is my favorite production of the opera.

Kanonort

Hi Johanna! Why don’t you resume singing maybe for yourself? Happy New Year to you! ❤️

Jae Crawford

@Kanonort Hello! I'm so sorry for the late response! I'm just now seeing your comment. The reason is that I am partially deaf and have felt too insecure in my abilities. i have recently purchased audio equipment and sang again, albeit hesitantly and, although I was rusty, it was such a good feeling. Because of my deafness, I often fear not being able to control my pitch (even though I have perfect pitch) and lots of bullying didn't help either. The equipment I now have helps me monitor myself a lot better and I will be singing again now. Thank you and a Happy New Year to you too (again very late haha)

Very Original Channel

Perfect tempo and wonderful breath control.

Arnold Amaral

I have heard this so many times with various sopranos and mezzo sopranos and it's hard to Define who are the best. And this is some very well you cannot compare greatness. This will go on my playlist. I will look for more performances from this Opera and put them on my playlist as well thank you it was very moving especially when they fell go sleep. Away brother and sister one of the jacket to sleep and at the end they both share the jacket xcetera. Excuse my typos I use the microphone when I make a comment due to an autoimmune disease I am okay thank you sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral
