Hotel California
Wiglaf Droste & das Spardosen-Terzett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Auf der Autobahn
In uns′rem alten Cabrio
Sogar unser Geld
Und wir gingen in die Halle
Die Gitarre unterm Arm
Doch der Mann an der Rezeption
Sah uns eisig an
Und sagte, dass das nicht ginge
Leute wie wir zwei
Lange Haare, fiese Ringe

The lyrics of Wiglaf Droste & das Spardosen-Terzett's song "Hotel California" start with a road trip towards south on the highway in an old convertible, where the wind is blowing through their hair. They are tanned and wearing blue jeans bleached by the sun. As it's almost dark, they reach the beach where they run barefoot on the sand, kiss each other, hug, and dance in joy until they see a concrete wall behind the dunes with a large sign: "Welcome to Hotel California, where dreams come true." The world seems beautiful here and the sun always shines. However, when they go to the reception with a guitar in their arms to book a room, the receptionist tells them that there is nothing available and advises them to have some whiskey at the Moonlight Bar. They order two colas and observe the cheap wallpaper and the girls at the bar. The singer then talks to the waiter with slicked hair about how the hotel destroys the beautiful beach and suggests that they sleep in a field of corn on white sand instead of the gray concrete block.
The song is a critique of the commercialization of dreams and the emptiness of glittering promises. It embodies a longing for authentic experiences, the beauty of simple things, and the freedom that comes with them, rather than the illusion of luxury, consumption, and conformity. The Hotel California represents a trap, a place where people lose their individuality, and their souls. The beach, on the other hand, represents the purity, authenticity, and serenity that people should strive for.
