Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, the soul and rnb artist influenced numerous musicians during his mutli-decade career and also played a role in the evolution of rock n roll music. Harrison's best known for having a Billboard #1 record in 1959 with the song "Kansas City", the track still picking up widespread airplay for years and years.

The song was was one of the first credited collaborations by the acclaimed musical team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the men writing it back in 1952. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. Harrison sang "Kansas City" for the Harlem based entrepreneur Bobby Robinson, and he recorded additional singles for the Fire and Fury record labels, which were owned and operated by Robinson.

After this spike of widespread success, Harrison continued to perform and record, exciting his many fans. However, it would be another ten years before he again cracked the Billboard Top 40 when he released "Let's Work Together (Part 1)", a track that went to #32 in early 1970 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 1970 hit version was distributed as a single through Sue Records (Sue 11) and was backed with "Let's Work Together (Part 2)". The full version of the tune, a five minute and ninteen second song that was included on the Sue Records album SSLP-8801, was simply called "Let's Work Together". An earlier version of the full song by Harrison came out in 1962 as "Let's Stick Together" (on Fury 1059 and Fury 1063).

A sign of Harrison's strong influence on soul music, cover versions of his song would be later be hits for both the American rock band Canned Heat and the British singer-songwriter Bryan Ferry. It was also recorded by country rock group The Kentucky Headhunters for the soundtrack to the Mickey Rourke film 'Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man'. Harrison had some additional success with "My Heart Is Yours", and his non-charting singles continued to be beloved among many American rnb fans. He toured for many years with a band known as 'Wilbert Harrison and The Roamers', as well as a solo act.

Harrison died of a stroke in 1994, in a Spencer, North Carolina nursing home at the age of 65. In 2001, his recording of "Kansas City" was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and has also been named as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Harrison was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

This was my Dad's favorite song 🎵. He would like to play it over and over and then dance 🕺to it. He was in his 60's and it didn't stop him from dancing to it. I also remember that my brothers and I lived in a home 🏡 filled with love 💘. My parents are gone now. R I P MOM AND DAD. YOU WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART ❤.

Great timeless song and record. But he sure need good coaching on his stage performance. He never looks at the #$&@* camera and delivers his performance to the &$#+*@ audience!!! Does he have a sane manager or execs at his label? No wonder this considerable talent was never able to follow Kansas City even with the great material he later recorded...

I think he was "shy, reserved and classy." I also like this performance for those same reasons. He probably did need a good manager to market him, but never got it. It is a pure shame because he was really, really talented. His sexual style is subtle, not pushy. These rock singers have to have some kind of sexual style that communicates to the audience. Take Chuck Berry, he was all over the place and Elvis Presley was the same, just moved, and moved, and it kept the audience moving. Wilbert is classy, way to classy to be anything other than "subtle sexually." He was a night club act is what I think also. These other guys, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and others were performers for huge concert audiences and they communicated a lot more sexuality in their performances. This guy is sweet, shy or bashful, subtly sexy, and talented in voice plus instruments, but the audience for him I think was more night club acts rather than these huge crowd hollering and screaming kind of audiences. This is first time I have heard him and I like him, or his version of this song much better than others who have recorded this song. I won't listen to the others now that I found this man's recording as I find it the best to listen to. Why he did not succeed greater I think is due a lot to not having proper management and could have been because of his reserve personality or quiet kind of bashful performances. The talent is in his voice and his musical instrument playing, but he does not put on a big, big show with body movements. He does a lot with his eyes, mouth and head, but I think what is different about him also makes him unique as opposed to the other performers of his time. I don't know his family background, but he looks like he comes from a classy background or middle class maybe even some upper class people, whereas, some of the other performers of his day came from other types of backgrounds. I know he was born into a large family, but somewhere, I say this man was taught some very good manners in which comes through every live performance I have seen of him. It is sad we don't have more of his live performances and maybe there is not a lot more, because also, I am thinking he might have done a lot that was not recorded like in night club acts across the country. Just my take on him. I plan on buying some of his music, but I am not sure who would get the money from it, since he is dead now, but he probably made a pretty good living from he did do in the music business is what I also think. Most of them spend it as fast as they make it and he probably was not different. But like you say, with the right kind of coaching from the right manager, he could have been more of a live performer like Chuck Berry and the rest of them, or maybe he just chose not to be as those. Wilbert Harrison has his own style and I appreciate that as well, so it might have been just as well to be as he was. Kind of reminds me a little bit of Pat Boone. Pat Boone never put on any big stage act either. He would just snap his fingers a little, so a lot of it has to do with these men's personalities and upbringing is what I think.
