Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, the soul and rnb artist influenced numerous musicians during his mutli-decade career and also played a role in the evolution of rock n roll music. Harrison's best known for having a Billboard #1 record in 1959 with the song "Kansas City", the track still picking up widespread airplay for years and years.

The song was was one of the first credited collaborations by the acclaimed musical team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the men writing it back in 1952. It sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. Harrison sang "Kansas City" for the Harlem based entrepreneur Bobby Robinson, and he recorded additional singles for the Fire and Fury record labels, which were owned and operated by Robinson.

After this spike of widespread success, Harrison continued to perform and record, exciting his many fans. However, it would be another ten years before he again cracked the Billboard Top 40 when he released "Let's Work Together (Part 1)", a track that went to #32 in early 1970 on the Billboard Hot 100. The 1970 hit version was distributed as a single through Sue Records (Sue 11) and was backed with "Let's Work Together (Part 2)". The full version of the tune, a five minute and ninteen second song that was included on the Sue Records album SSLP-8801, was simply called "Let's Work Together". An earlier version of the full song by Harrison came out in 1962 as "Let's Stick Together" (on Fury 1059 and Fury 1063).

A sign of Harrison's strong influence on soul music, cover versions of his song would be later be hits for both the American rock band Canned Heat and the British singer-songwriter Bryan Ferry. It was also recorded by country rock group The Kentucky Headhunters for the soundtrack to the Mickey Rourke film 'Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man'. Harrison had some additional success with "My Heart Is Yours", and his non-charting singles continued to be beloved among many American rnb fans. He toured for many years with a band known as 'Wilbert Harrison and The Roamers', as well as a solo act.

Harrison died of a stroke in 1994, in a Spencer, North Carolina nursing home at the age of 65. In 2001, his recording of "Kansas City" was given a Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and has also been named as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Harrison was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

This song was in my dream last night. It's always been a favorite of mine. My grandparents used to move all their furniture to the side in their living room and dance to their records from their youth. Including this little number.

Even my great grandfather really enjoyed this song and he wasn't exactly a fan of much of the music that came of the 50s and 60s. But this one was favorite of his as well.

My daddy passed away back in 2016. He was 84 years old and this was his FAVORITE song. I cry big ol fat tears while listening to this song. He was an Oklahoma farm boy that first came to Ft Worth Texas back in 1950 and he liked to go to the Stagecoach Ballroom just to dance his heart out. He went there for years. He told me that many, many times he'd tip the dj big money several times a night just to play this song when it first came out. Shortly before he passed away I would play this song for him and he would get the biggest grin on his face!! 😊

I was born in 1968 and this is a small piece of what my dad's record collection was like. I'm so glad to have heard and still continue listening to this awesome music. I think my dad had more Elvis Presley and Johnny Mathis records among many other legendary singers from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. It was a great time listening to his record collection as a kid.

It’s still a really fun and underrated place! The music scene rules, it’s becoming great for craft beer, riverboats if you like that sort of thing, the best tailgate culture in the country, and the bbq can’t be beat. And the arts scene is huge! Really low key vacation spot.

@@johndean4765When i started listening to the radio a few decades ago every station played 50s music, now none of them do, unfortunately everything eventually fades away, just like the 60s 70s 80s music also will someday, the sad truth. When everyone who had anything to do with them are dead and gone, those musical decades also will be no more.

My mom use to play all these song's in our house growing up as she was cooking or cleaning the house. Then when I was a teenager she'd be bumping them in her car everytime she'd pick me up from somewhere or from a friend's house. All my friend's loved my mom & thought she was the coolest. (Which she was) 😊She loved all the music from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's. My mom was a hip woman. I'm soo thankful for the good taste in music she had and that she imparted in me. She passed away at 64yrs old in 2014 but there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her or something reminds me of her. I played this song when Kansas City beat the 49ers to all my Niner family & friend's. Lol..

I was 14 when this movie came out in 1973 . The famous quote from this movie ,”where were you in 62?” What a great movie , what a great soundtrack, what times those must have been . It gave me a love & appreciation of that time . Great music ! ❤️❤️🎼🎼
