Wilbert Harrison was such a nice gentleman. I remember when he came to London brought by Credence Clearwater Revival to play support for their appearance at the Albert Hall . He was provided with a couple of young English musicians from the group The Gun who decided in rehearsal that they were not compatible with Wilbert`s style and abruptly left him alone on the stage. This he accepted with remarkable generosity of spirit and in the evening duly appeared playing guitar ,harmonica and drums on his own, an art he had learned from years of playing through the bad times. The bass drum bore the reference to his million-selling , Hot 100 topping 45 of "Kansas City". Ironically,
Wilbert Harrison had played on record with Wild Jimmy Spruill , King Curtis, Panama Francis and some of the greatest musicians New York could provide..
At this point of time in London , Wilbert had managed another hit ,a reworking of one of his old songs for the historic Sue label.."Lets stick together " had appeared before as "Let`s work together". Later versions by Canned Heat and Bryan Ferry are still widely played today and have been used in films and commercials.
So he is chiefly remembered for these songs but if you dig around, there are more gems .One favourite Wilbert Harrison 45 is "Off to work again" with King Curtis. And later sessions with Alan Toussaint provided more great music.
