sophomore petunia
Wilbur Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I take my dishes stack 'em up in the shower
I get all naked take a bath in the sink
I don't give a damn if your blinds ain't drawn
Kind of hoping you see me
Standing right where you are

'Cause I do it for you
Yo, kid you mess with my head
You make me dumber than I already am

'Cause I really like you

You put the slang in my dreams
Now, why could you be good for me?

You put the niece in my nephew
I hang low from the branch
I'm a goddamn sophomore petunia
At a middle school dance
And when I
Steal my jeans from the laundromat
And I find something that fits you
I fold it neat at your steps

I wanna kill in your name

Yo, kid you mess with my head
You make me dumber than I already am

'Cause I really like you

You put the slang in my dreams
Now, why could you be good for me?

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song "Sophomore Petunia" by Wilbur talks about peculiar behaviors and actions that are done with a hint of hope attached to it. The character in the song stacks the dishes in the shower and takes baths in the sink. This is bizarre behavior that the character is proud of and doesn't care if someone sees them. They hope that the person they are doing it for notices and maybe feels the same way as them. It shows that the character is willing to do unconventional things just to impress someone they have feelings for. This attitude of "I do it for you" suggests that the character is deeply infatuated with the person they are doing these things for.

The second verse of the song talks more about how the person the character is infatuated with makes them feel. They say that this person messes with their head, making them feel even dumber than they already are. However, despite this, they still really like this person. The character also acknowledges that this person brings excitement to their dreams through the use of slang and they wonder how being with them could benefit them. The chorus repeats the sentiment that the character really likes this person while acknowledging that they could be a bit of a fool for doing so. The line "I wanna kill in your name" suggests that the character would do anything just to make the person they like happy.
