07. Heavy Metal Drummer
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love

Shiny, shiny pants and bleached blond hair
A double kick drum by the river in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
Another then another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

Unlock my body and move myself to dance
Moving warm liquid, flowing blowing glass
Classical music blasting masks the ringing in my ears

Oh, I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wilco's song Heavy Metal Drummer convey a nostalgic and longing sentiment for a bygone era of youth, music and love. The singer reminisces about his experiences of attending heavy metal concerts during summer nights and the thrill of falling in love with the drummer of the band. He describes the typical aesthetic of the metal subculture with its shiny, tight pants and bleached blond hair, and the pulsing energy of the double kick drums by the river that evoked a sense of freedom and vitality. The repetition of the chorus "She fell in love with the drummer" echoes the intensity of the infatuation and suggests the fleeting and ephemeral nature of youthful desire.

The second verse shifts to the personal experience of the singer, who laments the loss of innocence and idealism that he associates with his past self. The reference to KISS, a iconic band of the 70s known for their flamboyant costumes and theatrical performances, represents a marker of a shared cultural memory and a form of escapism that allowed for a temporary release from the mundane realities of life. The lines "Unlock my body and move myself to dance / Moving warm liquid, flowing blowing glass" suggest a physical and emotional abandon, a surrender to the music that creates a sense of union and ecstasy. Nevertheless, the final repetition of the chorus underscores the desire to relive those moments of youthful joy and abandon, even if they are forever gone.
