1-08 What
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've said it with silence
I've said it real loud
From down underground way down
From over the clouds

So now I say nothing
And this much is true
What I don't believe means nothing
Nothing to you.

I shout from the mountains
That nothing need last
Your mind is made up made up
From time's blistered past

I can't hold a candle
To crimes half-recalled
What I don't believe means nothing
Nothing at all.

Can't you tell I won't fight anymore
And you know it's not right
You know it's not right

If my tongue moves I bite down
Before it can tell
How hard I've lied

I won't bother knocking
Where I'll never get in
I'm bound straight to hell for sure
If omission's a sin

I won't be the downfall
Of such miserable bliss

What I don't believe goes something
Something like this.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "What" by Wilco are a commentary on the futility of communication when two people have diametrically opposing beliefs. The singer has tried to make his beliefs known in various ways, from silence to shouting from the mountains, but ultimately has given up on trying to make himself heard. He acknowledges that what he doesn't believe, and therefore doesn't say, means nothing to the person he's trying to communicate with.

The lyrics are full of contradictions and ambivalence, indicating the frustration the singer feels with trying to convey his message to someone who has already made up their mind. He recognizes that his words would fall on deaf ears, and therefore there's no point in speaking them. The line "If my tongue moves I bite down/Before it can tell/How hard I've lied" is particularly telling, as it shows the extent to which the singer has internalized his beliefs and feels unable to express them truthfully.

The final verse is especially poignant, as it demonstrates the singer's realization that his beliefs may be seen as a threat to the happiness of the person he's trying to communicate with. He doesn't want to be the one to cause misery and ruin, and therefore chooses to keep his thoughts to himself. The line "What I don't believe goes something/Something like this" leaves the listener to wonder what exactly the singer is thinking but choosing not to say, highlighting the theme of the powerlessness of words.
