Capitol City
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Capitol city skyline photo
Skyscraper shines the sun so
Low in the sky
Secretaries at the hot dog vendors
Cabs honk at bicycle messengers
Rolling by

I can't call with a subway token
Anyway the phones are all broken
I wish you were here
Better yet I wish I was there with you

You wouldn't like it here
You should stay right there
Breathe in that country air
You wouldn't like it here

Capitol towers radiator steam vents
Scream along with the clarinets and arguments
Echo down the hall
I can't sleep, I can't wake up
I'm shaken up maybe we should break up
I wish you were here
Better yet I wish I was there with you

You wouldn't like it here
You should stay right there
Breathe in that country air
You wouldn't like it here

Capitol city skyline photo
Picture postcard signed the moon so
Low in the sky
I can't smile when my heart's still broken
Faraway, in love and unspoken

I wish you were here
Or I was there with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wilco's song Capitol City describe the feeling of disconnect and loneliness one can experience in a big city. The opening lines refer to the impressive skyline and the hustle and bustle of the city streets. The atmosphere is chaotic and impersonal, with people going about their daily business without acknowledging each other's existence. The singer is unable to connect with his lover through a phone call, reflecting the increasing isolation of modern life.

The second verse elaborates on the disorienting effect of living in the city. The sounds of the city, from car horns to steam vents, echo through the halls of the towering buildings, making it impossible for the singer to find peace or rest. The disorientation reaches such a level that the singer suggests breaking up with their lover. The refrain "You wouldn't like it here, you should stay right there, breathe in that country air" suggests that the singer's lover is far away from the city and is better off living a simpler life, away from the chaos that characterizes the city.

The last verse brings the song full circle, with a reference to the opening lines about the city's skyline. The singer acknowledges the beauty of the view but is unable to appreciate it fully because of his broken heart. He wishes his lover was there with him or that he could join his lover somewhere else, away from the grim reality of city living.

Awesome!

@Ashes2ash22

Catchy as fuck, in a "When I'm 64" kind of way, if BiIly Preston had played organ. Even has the Sergeant Pepper's penchant for atmospheric noises. And if that's not a Beatles' ending with the chimes, I don't know what is.

@danielebetti5092
