Sky Blue Sky
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh the band marched on in formation
The brass was phasing tunes I couldn't place
Windows open and raining in a room yellow, blue, gold and gray

The drunks were ricocheting
The old buildings downtown empty so long ago
Windows broken and dreaming
So happy to leave what was a home

With the sky blue sky, this ride in time wouldn't seem so bad to me now
Oh, I didn't die; I should be satisfied I survived
It's good enough for now

With the sky blue sky, this ride in time wouldn't seem so bad to me now

Oh, if I didn't die, I should be satisfied I survived
It's good enough for now

Overall Meaning

In Wilco's song Sky Blue Sky, lead singer Jeff Tweedy paints a vivid picture of a surreal world that seems to exist between reality and dreams. The lyrics describe a band marching in formation, playing music that the singer cannot recognize. In the background, rain is falling, and the colors of the world are blending together into a surreal mixture of yellow, blue, gold, and gray.

Through the window, the singer can see the old buildings of downtown, long abandoned and left to crumble away with time. The people who used to live there are gone, leaving the singer feeling a sense of nostalgia and a longing to leave behind what was once his home.

Yet, through all of this, the sky remains blue and clear. It's a symbol of hope and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is still something beautiful to hold onto. The singer realizes that while he may not have everything he wants in life, he has survived and that's good enough for now.

The song is both melancholic and uplifting, a poignant reminder that life is a journey full of highs and lows, but that we must keep moving forward, even when things seem uncertain.

This seems like an appropriate post apocalyptic song.

Very relaxing. This song has that Neil Young 'Harvest Moon' feel. These guys are really good and have a unique sound. Thumbs up for this band ....no doubt.

You nailed it, yours is a perfect description of this great song.Wilco, imho, is the perfect blend of the best music styles, ie.; Folk, Rock & Roll, Symphonic, New Wave, ..etc, with an Indie twist. By the way, I can attest after having watched them on the stage, that their playing life is as good sound-wise as their impeccable studio work. They remind me, in their professionalism and with the obvious differences in style, to Steely Dan. Thank you for reaching out. Stay safe!
