Trying To Break Your
Wilco Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am an American aquarium drinker
I assassin down the avenue
I'm hidin' out in the big city blinkin'
What was I thinkin' when I let go of you?

Let's forget about the tongue-tied lightning
Let's undress just like cross-eyed strangers
This is not a joke, so please stop smiling
What was I thinkin' when I said it didn't hurt?

I wanna glide through those brown eyes dreamin'
Take it from the inside, baby, hold on tight
You were so right when you said I've been drinkin'
What was I thinkin' when we said goodnight?

I wanna hold you in the Bible-black predawn
You're quite a quiet domino, bury me now
Take off your Band-Aid 'cause I don't believe in touchdowns
What was I thinkin' when we said hello?

I always thought that if I held you tightly
You would always love me like you did back then
Then I fell asleep and the city kept blinkin'
What was I thinkin' when I let you back in?

I am trying to break your heart
I am trying to break your heart
But still I'd be lying if I said it wasn't easy
I am trying to break your heart

Disposable Dixie-cup drinkin'
I assassin down the avenue
I'm hidin' out in the big city blinkin'
What was I thinkin' when I let go of you?

Loves you
I'm the man who loves you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" by Wilco is a melancholic reflection on a past relationship. The opening line, "I am an American aquarium drinker," sets the tone for the rest of the song, which utilizes vivid imagery and poetic language. The singer's mind jumps from memory to memory, struggling to make sense of what went wrong in the relationship.

The chorus, "I am trying to break your heart," is a declaration of the singer's intention to push their former lover away, perhaps out of fear of being hurt again or out of a feeling of unworthiness. The lines, "But still I'd be lying if I said it wasn't easy" illustrate the conflict within the singer's mind, as they grapple with the desire to move on and the pain of letting go.

Throughout the song, there are hints of regret and longing for what once was. The line "I always thought that if I held you tightly, you would always love me like you did back then" is a poignant expression of the singer's nostalgia for the past.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the complexities of love and relationships, and the difficulty of moving on from a broken heart.

Michael Mumford Is Killing Joke's self titled album certified platinum? Nope.

Sarah Blalock Would have if it weren't for their label and the leak of all tracks on file sharing sites. Wilcoworld apparently had 50,000 hits on the site, downloading the album in one damn day. It's listed by Rolling Stone as one the greatest all time and critical acclaim really never gets better than the ratings and reviews. So my bad, it isn't certified platinum because their label fucked them last minute, dropped them and support for the album, then leaked their songs for free. Forgive me for overstating the commercial success of Wilco and this album, but their greatness remains sadly underrated, overlooked, and underestimated except by anyone with ears and access, and you apparently. I'm sorry you have to live that way. Missing greatness with that chip on your shoulder promoting shit musicians. God bless.

shout outs to appreciating an album opening track in general though...i love it when the opener or closer fits it's position super well and is a straight banger...the war on drugs "lost in the dream" opening with "under the pressure", to me, is such a wild start to the album...kurt vile "wakin on a pretty daze" also starts and ends so well

The Good Kush

Wish Wilco would have have stayed on track with the experimental stuff though
