Call of the Dark
Wild Dogs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A common man in a common place
Rebel by night, soldier by day
Do what you're told
Well that's all right
Until the voice speaks inside

One more drink and he's on his way
When duty calls he will obey
When it's time to go all he knows
He has to answer to the call

The call of the dark
The call, the call of the dark

He can't resist, he has no choice
When summoned up, by jackal's voice
Into the deep, with a double life
He cuts right through, to the other side

Out on the prowl, he's got the ball
Hiding out, a chameleon
When it's time to move
There'll be no doubt
He always answers to the call

The call of the dark
The call, the call of the dark
The call of the dark
The call, the call of the dark

In the dark
By the dark

On the prowl, he's got the ball
Hiding like a chameleon
When it's time to move
There'll be no doubt
He has to answer the call

The call of the dark
The call, the call of the dark
The call of the dark
The call, the call of the dark

In the dark
In the dark

In the dark

In the dark, in the dark, in the dark
The call of the dark

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Wild Dogs' song Call of the Dark depicts a common man, who leads a double life. During the day, he serves as a soldier and fulfills his duties for his country, but at night, he rebels and answers to the "voice speaks inside". He is portrayed as a chameleon who can easily adapt to his surroundings and hide in plain sight. However, when he receives the call of the dark, the call of the wild, he cannot resist and obeys the summons of the jackal's voice. He surrenders to his primal instincts and goes on the prowl, cutting right through to the other side, into the deep, where he can freely express and manifest his inner dark personality. The call of the dark is stronger than any other obligation or duty, and he always answers whenever it beckons him.

The song's lyrics seem to convey a message about the duality of human nature that we all possess, and how some people may choose to lead two different lives, unable to fully express themselves in one world, thus seeking refuge and freedom in another. The call of the dark represents the inner desires that can sometimes be suppressed or concealed, and when they are let loose, they have the power to completely alter one's life.
