Colours
Wilde Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you don't say no, I'll never go
Far away, holding me in too tight
A part of me is never gonna let go
Of you, in your memory alive
It's a picturesque place, up in the space
Waiting for your love, and your warm embrace
Happiness times in like the sun
But it never seems to stay here too long

You're taking me away again
I, I don't want to know
It's taking me away again
I, I don't want to know
I don't want to know
I don't really care
I don't want to know
The colours can fill my head
I don't really care
I don't really care
I don't really care

There's a room I built I never thought
I's cross it
I found these keys in my pocket
I don't mean go in until I saw you in
and I knew it would be the end
It's a picturesque place, up in the space
Waiting for your love, and your warm embrace
Happiness times in like the sun
But it never seems to stay here too long

You're taking me away again
I, I don't want to know
It's taking me away again
I, I don't want to know
I don't want to know
I don't really care
I don't want to know
The colours can fill my head
I don't really care

I don't really care
I don't really care

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Wilde's song Colours, "If you don't say no, I'll never go," suggests that the singer is hesitant to let go of their love interest. The next line, "Far away, holding me in too tight," implies that this love interest is suffocating, or perhaps overbearing, controlling, or possessive. Despite this, the singer cannot seem to shake off the memories of their love interest, "A part of me is never gonna let go of you, in your memory alive." The stanza creates a sense of nostalgia and longing.

The second stanza further elaborates on this wistful atmosphere. Lines like, "It's a picturesque place, up in the space, waiting for your love, and your warm embrace," paint a picture of a beautiful yet unattainable scene that the singer can't help but imagine. However, the line, "Happiness times in like the sun, but it never seems to stay here too long," has a bittersweet overtone to it, suggesting that even moments of joy are fleeting and temporary. The chorus repeats the line, "You're taking me away again, I don't want to know," indicating that the singer is reluctant to leave this idealized image behind.

The third and final stanza introduces a new element with the line, "There's a room I built I never thought I'd cross it." This could reference a physical or emotional space that the singer has avoided until now. However, the stanza concludes with the line, "and I knew it would be the end," suggesting that facing this room, or crossing this threshold, marks the end of something significant. The song concludes with a repeated refrain of, "I don't really care," implying that perhaps the singer has resigned themselves to moving on, or at the very least, acknowledging that there's not much they can do about it.
