Born in Altamira, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Vargas began his musical studies early, attending the Municipal Academy of Music beginning at age 10. He has been a trumpeter and a vocalist, but has also arranged, composed, and led his band, and is also a producer. He began his career with the band "Wilfrido Vargas y sus Beduinos" by recording his first album in 1974.
During the 1980's he had international commercial success with songs such as: "El Barbarazo", "El Jardinero", "La Medicina", and "El Loco y La Luna" (which was nominated for a Grammy in 1989).
Today Vargas is one of the best-known merengue singers in all Latin America with hit songs such as "El Africano", "Abusadora", "Comejen", "A Mover la Colita" and "El Baile del Perrito".

Y así le decía
Mami el negro 'tá rabioso
Quiere pelea conmigo, decíselo a mi papa
Mami yo me acuesto tranquila
Me arropo pie' cabeza y el negro me destapa
Ay, ¿qué será lo que quiere el negro?
Mami, ¿qué será lo que quiere el negro?
Mami, ¿qué será lo que quiere el negro?
Jaja
Tú sabe'
The lyrics to Wilfrido Vargas's song El Africano tells a story of a young black man who seems to be infatuated with a young black woman. The young woman refers to him as "el negro" in the song, which means "the black guy." She calls out to her mother stating that the black guy is angry and wants to fight her. She asks her mother to relay the message to her father. Despite the black guy's aggression towards her, she goes to bed feeling peaceful. She wraps herself from head to toe, but the black guy still manages to uncover her. The chorus is a repetition of the young woman asking her mother what the black guy wants. The song is written in a humorous tone and seems to be about young love and curiosity.
