I love Jake’s videos but am finding it a bit concerning that even after his acknowledging one of the mistakes in this video (after a commenter pointed it out), there’s still no correction displayed, even two years later. Not to mention the other errors which another person had pointed out.

Now I’m wondering how much misinformation I may have absorbed from taking notes based off of these videos.

Please double check your content for potential oversights before posting your videos Jake! And please offer corrections after errors are brought to your attention. Accurate content is more important than the amount of content. Thanks bro 🙏

@Escape99100 C phrygian is the 3rd mode of Ab major (not C dorian). Bb dorian is the 2nd mode. In the key of Ab major the Bb and C are both minor chords.

Example: You want G dorian. Dorian is the second note, take the F scale because G is the second note of the F scale, and rearrange the notes to start with G

You don't have to memorize that or even have it as a screenshot. If you take a scale, and then start at a different note, realize that it's the same order of notes. You just have to remember that starting on the second note is the dorian, the third note is the phrygian, and so on.

yep, the Am to G# maj to G maj works well because the notes CONNECT WELL. They are not disjointed and unrelated and that, I think, is what chord progressions is all about. You look for chords that have a COMMON note or notes and that'll make them seem to go together in a more logical fashion. Nice video!

Radiohead and Beatles tracks are pretty much built on borrowed chords and modal interchange! Good catch. Very rarely does the former write progressions without them - they also tend to start on a chord that's not the root.

I commend you sir..., your knowledge of theory is very impressive. It is refreshing to see younger players have an interest in, let alone knowledge of theory and how to apply it. I mean no disrespect on the term younger. I am certianly much older, undergrade in Music Ed, and did my time trying to make a living as a guitarist in numerous bands in the 60's and 70's.

I rarely find any players today that have you knowledge, so kudos to you!

@Jonathan Cook I was born in the early 90s , and i agree with you. I started playing with an electric guitar and didn't get a lot of real lessons. I was thought how to hold the guitar and the pick , in a month i was thought some basic chord shapes and that was that. But i was REALLY in to metal because metal is the one western genre of music where i always hear sprinkles of Middle Eastern music. So i started looking up lessons on youtube about what a key is and how to harmonize scales etc. Eventually i could access so much information online that i eventually had to stop watching new and interesting lessons and get to work developing a "what works" attitude. I used to play mostly blues+metal those days. In about a year i could learn the main melodies of traditional Turkish songs. I am Turkish and learning traditional Turkish music theory is really hard given how every single different key is called a different maqam with it's own name and playing styles as in a maqam that resolves high or low etc... Anyways with my knowledge of western harmony , wich is absolutely extremely efficient ; i could learn almost any musical style by ear. I still don't know how to read sheet music but just a simple step like learning how to harmonize the major scale and then applying the same concept to what you call Phrygian dominant (we call it Hijaz or Uzzal and it is like the major scale in our tradition , most other maqams are a deviation of that and it is actually called the Hijaz family) i could actually write metal music while knowing both the Western style of diatonic keys and the Eastern style of makams and taksims etc.
Not to brag , i said i can't even read sheet music and everybody can write metal songs these days. But 6 years later i can now play the electric guitar , oud , darbouka and most importantly a "ney"
That is a flute mostly used by sufis and learning it is supposed to be extremely difficult...

I started playing in the early 90s, when you basically had your local music instructor, friends, and music books to learn from. Learning instruments today though is so different. Ideas travel around the world near instantly, and you can now take lessons from the best musicians in the world from your house. Learning now is so much faster than it was back then.

And back with limited resources I didn't know what I didn't know lol. I didn't know that I should be asking about these different theoretical topics, and my local instructor wasn't the greatest. Back then you had to basically be in a good music scene, or move to one. Now seems like more of an even playing field for learning in general. Although now there is the problem of information overload, and bouncing around too quickly, and doing short term memory learning.

So it definitely makes sense to see younger, and younger musicians with incredible skills, and knowledge, which is great. Its been so much easier for me to learn new instruments these days.

Jake is one of the best guitar teachers on Youtube. I like how he explains things in a simple way and sincerely enjoys sharing his knowledge and time (as illustrated by his soon to be released pay as you wish rhythm course). The one thing I think he should focus more on though, is addressing the errors in his videos (like the one at 5:50 in this one; which he even acknowledged over 2 years ago. A simple text overlay would suffice. Thanks!

I learned all of this from music theory classes. I would highly recommend if you take music theory classes to do so in conjunction with piano classes/lessons. Piano is the best instrument to apply music theory to because all the notes are laid out in sequence and there is only one piano key per note (as opposed to guitar, where it is possible to play the same note in many different places even in standard tuning, for example: B3 can be played on five of the six strings)

Thanks so much for this video Jake, I never understood why in some songs there would be a chord that wasn't in the key that the song supposedly was. I figured that the people writing the songs thought it just sounded cool, now I know that there is some theory behind it. Again, can't thank you enough

I like how your videos are much more practical and down to earth. I feel like I can immediately hop on a piano and try them out rather than let it sink in for days like Adam Neelys stuff which is meant to be more abstract.

Wow mind unlocked! I’ve always struggled with the concept of using modes and whilst I’m playing guitar to create a progression, melody or riff I stumble across something that works yet not falls in that key and now I know why. A simple “trick” if you will but I don’t think I’ve seen or read a better explanation that sometimes you just borrow a chord from a parallel scale. That’s the key for me, though I suspect it’s not the whole story
