In 1988, Downing finally made his solo debut, releasing the self-titled Will Downing. The album featured a new version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The track did not fair well on the R&B charts but it managed to reach #4 on the Dance charts. In the United Kingdom, "A Love Supreme" managed to reach #14 on the singles charts.
Downing has released many albums throughout his career, always on the brink of stardom but never quite making it. In 1989 he released Come Together As One and in '91, Dream Fulfilled. The latter featured the single "I Try" which reached #13 on the R&B charts, Downing's best performance to date.
1993 saw Downing's fourth album release with Love's the Place to Be. In 1995, he released Moods and in 1997, Invitation Only. Continuing his steady stream of releases, 1998 saw Pleasures of the Night, 2000 offered All the Man You Need and in 2002, Sensual Journey.
With so many albums under his belt, Downing never slows down, releasing Emotions in 2003, Christmas, Love and You in 2004 and Soul Symphony in 2005.
While Will Downing has never been a massive celebrity in the United States, he has seen reasonable success in the United Kingdom.
Christmas Time is Here
Will Downing Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Happiness and cheer
Time for all that children call
Their favorite time of the year
Snowflakes in the air
Carols everywhere
Olden times and ancient rhymes
Sleigh bells in, in the air
There's beauty every, every, every, everywhere
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories are there
Yuletide by the fireside
And joyful memories are there
Christmas time
Christmas time
Christmas time
Ohh, that we could, we could always see
Such spirit through the year
Will Downing's song "Christmas Time Is Here" is a beautifully written tune that captures the essence of one of the happiest times of the year which is Christmas. The opening stanza of the song sets the tone for the rest of the composition with the line "Christmas time is here." This is followed by the phrases "happiness and cheer" and "time for all that children call their favorite time of the year."
The following verse brings up the poetic language that references some of the Christmas customs that have been passed down through the generations. The lyric talks about "snowflakes in the air" which is a way of describing the beauty of the Christmas season with snow falling from the sky. A great way of inspiring the listener to visualize a snow-covered landscape. The line "carols everywhere" speaks to the musical aspect of Christmas and how people sing in unison a variety of the classics.
The third verse brings up the image of a cozy atmosphere where families gather around the hearth and enjoy each other's company. The line "Yuletide by the fireside" is particularly evocative and captures the essence of the holiday season. The final stanza, "Ohh, that we could, we could always see such spirit through the year" brings up the most poignant point of the song. The sentiment in the song is that the joy and happiness that come with Christmas should be present every day of the year.
