In 1988, Downing finally made his solo debut, releasing the self-titled Will Downing. The album featured a new version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The track did not fair well on the R&B charts but it managed to reach #4 on the Dance charts. In the United Kingdom, "A Love Supreme" managed to reach #14 on the singles charts.
Downing has released many albums throughout his career, always on the brink of stardom but never quite making it. In 1989 he released Come Together As One and in '91, Dream Fulfilled. The latter featured the single "I Try" which reached #13 on the R&B charts, Downing's best performance to date.
1993 saw Downing's fourth album release with Love's the Place to Be. In 1995, he released Moods and in 1997, Invitation Only. Continuing his steady stream of releases, 1998 saw Pleasures of the Night, 2000 offered All the Man You Need and in 2002, Sensual Journey.
With so many albums under his belt, Downing never slows down, releasing Emotions in 2003, Christmas, Love and You in 2004 and Soul Symphony in 2005.
While Will Downing has never been a massive celebrity in the United States, he has seen reasonable success in the United Kingdom.
If I Ever Lose This Heaven

All I ask is why?
If you're playin', all I'm sayin'
Is feelings sure collide?
If you're lyin', keep on lyin'
Don't tell the truth, don't you dare
(Don't you dare)
After takin' me way up there
If I ever lose this heaven
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
I'll never be the same
You're fascinating, more fascinating
Than the dark side of the moon
You're so exciting that I'm re-writing
The book of love called you
If I ever lose this heaven
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
I'll never be the same
Don't you walk away from me, baby
No
If I ever lose this heaven
(Ever lose this heaven, no)
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
I'll never be the same
(If I ever, ever, ever, ever)
If I ever lose this heaven
(Lose this heaven)
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
(Ever lose)
I'll never be the same
If I ever lose this heaven
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
(Ever, never never, no)
I'll never be the same
(Never be, never be, never be the same)
If I ever lose this heaven
If I ever, ever, ever lose this heaven
I'll never be the same
(Never be, never be, never be the same)
Don't you walk away from me, baby
The lyrics of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" by Will Downing express the fear of losing a perfect love or a perfect state of being. The song is about being willing to tolerate lies and deceit just to avoid losing the "heaven" that the singer has with their lover. The opening lines suggest the singer's confusion about their partner's intentions. They want to know why their partner is playing games or fooling around. The singer feels that their emotions are on the line, and they are afraid of being hurt.
However, later in the song, the singer seems to accept the idea of being lied to, as long as they can keep the relationship going. The lines "If you're lyin', keep on lyin'/ Don't tell the truth, don't you dare" indicate that the singer would rather live in a world of lies if it means keeping their love. The singer's love for their partner is so strong that they view them as fascinating and exciting, someone who can do no wrong. They are the "dark side of the moon" that is still a wonder to behold.
The repeated refrain "If I ever lose this heaven/ I'll never be the same" is a powerful expression of the singer's need to hold on to their happiness. They are willing to do whatever it takes to keep their "heaven," even if it means turning a blind eye to their lover's faults. The desperation in the singer's voice as they plead with their lover not to leave them suggests that this heaven is truly their only source of joy and fulfillment.
