In 1988, Downing finally made his solo debut, releasing the self-titled Will Downing. The album featured a new version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." The track did not fair well on the R&B charts but it managed to reach #4 on the Dance charts. In the United Kingdom, "A Love Supreme" managed to reach #14 on the singles charts.
Downing has released many albums throughout his career, always on the brink of stardom but never quite making it. In 1989 he released Come Together As One and in '91, Dream Fulfilled. The latter featured the single "I Try" which reached #13 on the R&B charts, Downing's best performance to date.
1993 saw Downing's fourth album release with Love's the Place to Be. In 1995, he released Moods and in 1997, Invitation Only. Continuing his steady stream of releases, 1998 saw Pleasures of the Night, 2000 offered All the Man You Need and in 2002, Sensual Journey.
With so many albums under his belt, Downing never slows down, releasing Emotions in 2003, Christmas, Love and You in 2004 and Soul Symphony in 2005.
While Will Downing has never been a massive celebrity in the United States, he has seen reasonable success in the United Kingdom.
No Love Intended
Will Downing Lyrics

Now I know the score its not hurting anymore
It ended
No love intended
I thought it would be a long lasting obsession
But now I know it was just a moment's possession
Now I clearly see you only wanted a part of me
It ended
I'm the one who fell so heavy in love
You're the one who was so cool
In you I thought I'd find the answers of life
In me I find a lover fooled
I thought that I would be the one to set your in motion
But now I know I could never win your devotion
Now I clearly see you only wanted part of me
It ended. No love, no love, no love
No love intended
Now I clearly see you never really loved me
It ended, ended, ended
No love intended
You never really loved me
Wanted me for a little bit of money
No love no love intended
The lyrics of "No Love Intended" by Will Downing convey a message about unrequited love and the pain that comes with it. Initially, the singer believed that he was experiencing a true connection with his partner, but as time progressed, he realized that it was just a physical attraction. He acknowledges that the relationship is over and that there was never any love intended from his partner's side. The singer thought that this relationship would last forever, but he now understands that it was just a momentary obsession, and he begins to see clearly that his partner only wanted a part of him, not him entirely.
The theme of the song seems to be about coming to terms with heartbreak and acknowledging the reality of a relationship that didn't work out. The singer deals with his disappointment by being honest with himself, but the pain of rejection still stings. He had expectations of a deep and mutual love, but his partner had much more superficial, temporary intentions. The lyrics highlight that he fell hard in love, but his beloved remained guarded and stayed cool. In the end, it was a betrayal of his emotions, and he was left feeling played.
