These songs are dangerous! Dangerous, I tell you! My kid (aged 9) learned "springtime for Hitler" and was running around the schoolyard singing it, and boy oh boy did WE get called into the principal's office! Schools have absolutely no sense of humor, and the principal had never seen The Producers, but we managed to explain it anyway. Wow!

Fun fact: in my first year of theatre, at the end, we had to sing a song from a musical. What song did I choose? Why, none other than this one! I was amazing and feel that I performed excellently, and I must have been as excellent as I felt afterward as I got good marks on it! It was fun.

I don't really keep up to date with musicals (since none are available to me where I live except as shitty bootleg recordings) or movie musicals - but as far as I can tell most of the recent movie musicals have been tragedies and dramas, right? The Producers, on the other hand, is comedy.

I'd wager that some genres, and certainly some topics, are much easier to translate into a different medium than others. In a tragedy, over the top musical acting works on stage but not so much on screen. Comedy mostly just has to make the jokes land.

And, of course, it matters who it is that translates the musical into a movie, and which actors they get for the roles. The Producers didn't just get famous names for the sake of famous names alone, they got people who could do the jokes.

I was i. High school when this came out, and my sister, her friend and I went to the movies to see another movie that was sold out, so we had to pick another movie and shrugged and picked this movie. Best non-disappointment movie I have ever seen. We were all laughing the whole time! I immediately bought it once it came to DVD and now I have it on vudu.

I have a great story about singing Springtime for Hitler..I have a car with a nice sunroof, and I usual have the air on but I like to occasionally open the sun roof. One rather nice day, I had my stereo going, and I don't blast it, it's at a normal volume, and I'm singing at the top of my voice over the air conditioner...I really wasn't paying attention to my surroundings, bc I stopped at a light just when the words, That's our Hitler! came out..Well let me tell you..There were a few cars next to me, who did a little head spin thing..but then realized, I was singing, not speaking..and only 1 car pulled away rather pissy..2 others were laughing!!!

I love this movie, I don't understand why people either don't like it or have never heard of it. I can understand maybe if they prefer the broadway version or even if they grew up watching the original, the new one might not might be too similar. And yeah, since it's essentially a broadway show in movie form, it does make the mistake of going too long (because movies don't have intermissions). But even with that said, the music is great, the talent is top, every single second of screen time is throwing a joke at you, and it's still Mel Brooks, which means most of the jokes are hilarious. A lot of effort and talent went into this movie and it shows. Why do people never talk about this movie?

How did I get here, you ask?
Well one day I got curious about the concept of "YouTube abridged series" so I started watching them. I stumbled upon one called "Dragon Ball Z Abridged". I really liked it a lot. In fact, I watched it several times. But at one point one of the characters (a german sounding demon in HFIL) is humming a strange song. I got curious and found a comment that said it was "Haben Sie gehoert das deutsche Band" SO I google it and somehow I stumble upon a clip from a movie(?) where Will Ferrell is an angry Nazi singing a song that I'm pretty sure isn't real German and calling Hitler "butch".

Anyway, it's a pretty good song.

I don't understand why Musicals aren't boffo at the Box Office any more. My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Funny Girl, etc were runaway hits, but even the very best of Broadway can't make money any more. Will Farrell was stupendous in this movie as were Lane and Broderick.
