The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Will Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air

I begged and pleaded with her the other day
But she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way
She gave me a kissin' and she gave me my ticket
I put my Walkman on and said I might as well kick it

First class, yo this is bad,
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass
Is this what the people of Bel Air livin' like
Hm this might be alright!

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
License plate said 'Fresh' and had dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to Bel Air

I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie, yo Holmes smell ya later

Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel Air

Overall Meaning

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a theme song that tells the story of Will Smith’s character and the circumstances that led him to move from his hometown in West Philadelphia to live with his aunt and uncle in the luxurious community of Bel Air. The verses are filled with a detailed account of the events that occurred in Will's life which resulted in him becoming the prince of a town called Bel Air. The song begins by foreshadowing the events that have happened in Will's life as the lyrics state, "Now this is the story all about how, My life got flipped, turned upside down." The first few verses then introduce the listener to Will's childhood, his favourite pastime activities, and how he spent his days on the playground.

However, everything changes when he gets into a fight with some guys in his neighborhood. His mother, who is concerned for his safety, decides to send him to live with his aunt and uncle in Bel Air, hoping that it will provide him with a better future. Will is initially opposed to the idea and tries to convince his mother to change her mind, but she doesn't relent, and he ends up going to Bel Air. As he settles into his new life, Will becomes acquainted with a different lifestyle that he wasn't accustomed to back in West Philadelphia. He is shown luxurious living, a new lifestyle, and is given an opportunity to start afresh.

Hmm, this might be alright
But wait, I hear they're prissy, bourgeois, all that
Is this the type of place that they just send this cool cat?
I don't think so
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
Well, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested yet, I just got here
I sprang with the quickness like lightning, disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said, "Fresh" and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought "Nah, forget it, yo, holmes to Bel Air"
I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo holmes, smell ya later"
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air
