Abide With Me
William H. Monk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some days my dreams fly over my head
It seems I'm going nowhere fast
Promises buried in the sand
But You said that this all would pass (yeah yeah)

(Chorus)

Cause I can do anything I want to
As long as You (As long as You)
Are here with me
I can move mountains by the thousands
I can walk on water (Walk on water)
As long as you're with me

I chalk one up
Because I'm gaining ground
I'm off on my own again
But I hit the wall at the speed of sound
Someday I'll learn to see Your plan (yeah yeah)

(Chorus)

With me

(Chorus)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to William H. Monk's song Abide With Me express the singer's struggles in life and the solace they find in their faith. The opening lines "Some days my dreams fly over my head, it seems I'm going nowhere fast" suggest a sense of aimlessness and frustration in their life. Despite feeling like promises are "buried in the sand," the singer finds comfort in the belief that everything will eventually pass, as affirmed by their faith. The chorus embodies a sense of empowerment that comes from this belief. It proclaims that with faith, they can achieve anything, even move mountains and walk on water. The repetition of "as long as you're with me" reinforces the idea that faith in a higher power provides the strength and courage to overcome any obstacle.

The second verse continues to express the singer's struggles with life, as they describe hitting a wall "at the speed of sound." However, the promise of discovering and understanding God's plan for them gives them hope for the future. The phrase "Someday I'll learn to see Your plan" suggests a desire for insight and understanding that goes beyond their earthly struggles.

Overall, the lyrics to Abide With Me are a poignant reflection of the struggles and triumphs of living a faithful life. They speak to the human experience of feeling lost and helpless, but also to the enduring hope and strength that comes from relying on a higher power.

Growing up singing this hymn it remains a favorite. It is common for various renderings to be published and verses added and deleted over time. I’ve noted in several renderings (including this one)that a favorite verse is omitted:

4
I need Thy presence every passing hour:
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, oh, abide with me.

Well done and keep the hymns coming!

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Change and decay in all around I see
O Thou who changest not, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting?
Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me
Abide with me, abide with me

My mother brought my sister and I to church. The music kept me going. It took a global pandemic that has kept me from missing services and choir rehearsals. Perhaps we can sing through our masks?
Thank you, Kings Singers for my daily practice time and the delight of polishing favorites music and falling in in love with new compositions and arrangements. 🎼🎵🎶🎚🎹

My mother developed Alzheimer's and could not recognize her daughters. Her beautiful singing voice and reading of bed time stories became a monotone with indication that the words she did remember ment nothing to her. However, prior to her death she kept repeating one word over and over with feeling and emotion: "Jesus, Jesus, . . .
