Early in the Morning
Willie "Cowboy" Craig and group Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know I'm not around much
But something's telling me
That now would be a good time to leave
They watched you from behind your back
It nearly gave you a heart attack, I know
You're always worried
But you panic every single night
And it'll never stop until it feels right, I know
You're in a hurry
But I know where you'll be, and I'll keep an eye
It's not as much to say goodbye as it is
To be apart of your life

I know it's not the same as it was before
But all in a moment's time
Maybe we'll figure it out
But what was I to do
When I had nothing to hold from you
What was I to prove

I know I wasn't there for you
And it was gone without an explanation

Overall Meaning

The song "Early in the Morning" by Willie "Cowboy" Craig and group is a heartfelt and introspective ballad that explores themes of self-reflection, regret, and the complexities of relationships. The opening lines of the song, "I know I'm not around much, but something's telling me that now would be a good time to leave" suggest a sense of restlessness and perhaps dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. The singer seems to be struggling with a difficult decision, one that may involve leaving a significant other or loved one behind.

The second verse delves deeper into the singer's feelings, revealing a sense of guilt and regret for not being there for their partner in the past. The line "I know I wasn't there for you, and it was gone without an explanation" suggests a past failure to communicate, to be present, or to make their partner feel valued. The chorus, "But what was I to do when I had nothing to hold from you, what was I to prove" further emphasizes this sense of powerlessness and regret. It seems as though the singer is grappling with a difficult decision- to stay or to go- and is haunted by unresolved feelings of guilt and regret over past mistakes.

Overall, "Early in the Morning" is a poignant and emotionally complex song that showcases Willie "Cowboy" Craig and group's ability to explore deep and challenging themes through their music.

I heard this when it released. I was watching TV in jail in Newark Ohio. I started crying and had to get up and go to my cell. It reminded me of my dad, a huge Willie fan, and I was so sad I disappointed him. Music can be so inspiring and powerful.

What I love about this.... is Shania's complete control and the fact she doesnt feel the need to add abunch of extra runs like newer singers do.... just sing the melody and enjoy the melody the way the original composer made it....... shania is and always will be my favourite singer, not just cuz she's ojibway like me but also because her voice is one of a kind and she is one of the most gracious and humble celebrities out there....

@Mr.Hamburger179

I agree with you.
Some of singers like to cover other singers song by changing them however they want to sing them. They must don't do that, please respect the original singers who created their masterpieces

@leegrant7333

it becomes more about them than the song...

@frankandstern8803

My God, her voice when hanging on notes is like silver brook water sliding over stones. Goes all through me. THANK YOU FOR THE MEMS WILLY.
