Lost Highway
Willie & Merle Lyrics

For a life of sin I have paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway
Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
A woman's lies make a life like mine
I started rolling down that lost highway
I was just a lad, nearly twenty two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
I started rolling down that lost highway
Now boys don't start to ramblin' round
On this road of sin are you sorrow bound
Take my advice or you'll curse the day
I started rollin' down that lost highway
Started rolling down that lost highway
The lyrics of "Lost Highway" by Willie & Merle depict a story of a wayward man who has led a life filled with sin and regret. He is a "rollin' stone" who is lost and alone, paying the price for the sins he has committed. As he passes by people, they look at him as just another guy on the "lost highway". The highway is a symbol of his life - a path that he has taken that leads him nowhere but to a life of loneliness.
The man's life is just a deck of cards and a jug of wine. He has been led astray by a woman's lies and now finds himself on this lost highway. The day they met, he went astray, and since then, he has been rolling down the lost highway. He was just a young man of twenty-two, neither good nor bad, but now he has lost his way completely. He knows it is too late for him to pray and find his way back home.
The song ends with a warning to young boys not to follow the same path, not to start ramblin' round on this road of sin, or they will curse the day they started rolling down that lost highway. The lyrics are reflective of the consequences of one's actions and the importance of making the right choices in life.

I finally remember the voice Kurt Nilsen reminds me of...Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies, especially in the song "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" the one that starts like this:
Once there was this kid who
Got into an accident and couldn't come to school
But when he finally came back
His hair had turned from black into bright white
He said that it was from when
The cars had smashed him so hard.
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm...
