Hutch produced albums by acts such as The 5th Dimension, Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson.
Besides writing hit songs such as The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There", Hutch also recorded several albums for Motown (and later for Whitfield Records, run by former Motown producer Norman Whitfield), and had Top 20 R&B hits with singles such as "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" and "Slick" (both 1973). Following in the tradition of Curtis Mayfield, he recorded the soundtrack album for the blaxploitation films The Mack (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974).
Moving back to Dallas in 1994, he continued to record and perform while living comfortably on royalties from old hits and new samples. His manager, Anthony Voyce, said of Hutch: "I've never met a more generous and caring person." He died in 2005.
He is survived by six children, and was the uncle to Cold 187um of the rap group Above The Law.[1]

California my way, everyday
I've got my bags packed, yeah
and I'm well on my way
Girl, I should be there, in the wrought of my day
Yes I do (Yes, I do, go there, yeah), I really really wanna go there
They say, 'til you've been there, you haven't been nowhere
California, my way, yeah, anyday, whoa
Gonna hit the highway, yeah, what a way, whoa! (whoa!) Oh, whoa (whoa!)
California, my way, yeah! (whoa!) Gonna, gonna hit the highway, baby (whoa!)
Got to tell it!
Ahh Yeah! Ahh yeah!
I've got my bags packed, girl
and I'm well on my way, yeah, (Do-da-loo)
Girl, I should be there, in the wrought of my day
Oh, yes I do (I wanna go there, yeah), I really really wanna go there (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
They say, 'til you've been there, you haven't been nowhere
California, my way, yeah, anyday, whoa
Gonna hit the highway, yeah, what a way, whoa! (whoa!) Oh, whoa (whoa!)
California, my way, Hah! Oh yeah! (whoa!) Gotta, gotta hit, hit, hit, got, got, got, got, gotta, hit, hit the highway, baby!
Gonna, Gonna hit the highway
C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a - gotta find ya out on my way
C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a - gotta find ya out on my way
C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a - Hah - Hah - Hah! Here I come, girl!
C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a - gotta find ya!
I gotta catch a boat, or plane, train, baby, I'm on my way!
I gotta catch a boat, or plane, train, baby, I'm on my way!
California! California!
California, Yah!
California!
California!
Hold on!! Gotta get on down! Gotta gotta gotta get on down!
Aaaah Aaahh Aahhh Ah Ahh! Whoo!
Gitta gotta get on down! Ahh! Hah!
Ohhhh! Gotta gotta gotta get on down!
Gotta gotta get on down!
Ah, California! California!
