Heart Of Gold
Willie Nelson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to live
I want to give
I've been a miner for a heart of gold
Its these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind, its such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old

Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old
I've been a miner for a heart of gold

Overall Meaning

In Willie Nelson's song Heart of Gold, he expresses his desire to live and give love to someone through his search for a heart of gold. He compares himself to a miner, someone who works tirelessly searching for precious metals, but in this case, he's searching for a person with a heart of gold. He persists in his search despite his old age, emphasizing that love and connection not only transcend time but also keep us feeling youthful.

The verses highlight his travels to different places in search of love, from crossing the ocean to Hollywood and Redwood. However, he realizes that it's not a physical search but a search within his mind, finding the balance between wanting to give love and accepting it in return. The line "Its these expressions I never give" refers to his struggle to express himself fully, which keeps him searching for that heart of gold.

The repeated lines "Keep me searching for a heart of gold" and "And I'm getting old" illustrate the cyclic nature of his search, as well as the urgency he feels as time passes. Overall, Nelson's Heart of Gold is a beautiful reminder of the importance of searching for love, no matter how old or tired we might feel.

I never thought I'd ever hear a version of this song that I would like better than Neil Young's original from the Harvest album. I've heard dozens of cover versions over the years and most of them annoy me. No one should ever do a cover version of a great song unless they can somehow do it better than the original (hard to do but happens sometimes) or they can do a song in such a way that they are able to make it unique and their own. Willie has succeeded on both counts here. This is a beautiful and unique version of this song and I like it almost as much as the original. It definitely does not annoy me. Great job Willie.
