As Time Goes By
Wilson Dooley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss
A sigh is just a sigh
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by

And when two lovers woo
They still say "I love you"
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate
Woman needs man, and man must have his mate
That no one can deny

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate
Woman needs man, and man must have his mate
That no one can deny

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die

The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by

original intro:

'This day and age we’re living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension
Yet we grow a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein’s theory
So we must get down to earth
At times relax, relieve the tension
No matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.'

" you must remember this...." - who could ever forget?

@Kickingit06

I wonder whether this song would be nearly so loved had it not been in so many movies. I guess we'll never know.

@szinthom1

I'm 29 years old, I'm watching the movie The Mandela Effect (2019) and the one song that the daughter is playing on the piano, I notice part of the melody. Now I find out that the song is from the movie Casablanca and realize that the song is the origin of the Warner Bros. jingle! And yes, I never saw Casablanca, that's probably why it took so long!

A great song, from one of the best movies, ever! Here's looking at you kid.... Play it Sam, if she can stand it, so can I.

@Trombonology

This song is intrinsically good, but I believe it's Dooley's very moving treatment that makes it great and immortal.

Love the TV series. No wonder I love the song, as it was a hit the year I was born.
