The Wilson sisters and Phillips were friends from childhood, growing up in southern California in the 1970's and 1980's. The three shared a love of music and songwriting, and developed their own style of vocal harmonies. In 1989, producer Glen Ballard and SBK Records signed the trio to a record deal.
Wilson Phillips released their debut album Wilson Phillips in 1990. They shot to fame with their debut single, the # 1 hit "Hold On". The album was a hit, producing three number one singles and selling 10 million copies worldwide.
They released their follow-up album Shadows and Light in 1992. It was much less successful, producing no top ten singles and selling one million copies. Shortly after, the group decided to split up.
During the next decade, the group went their separate ways. Chynna Phillips released a solo album, "Naked and Sacred" in 1995, while the Wilson sisters released a Christmas album in 1993 and an album "The Wilsons" in 1997. Carnie also went on to host her own television talk show, while Phillips married actor William Baldwin. A "Greatest Hits" album was released in 2000, although the group did not officially reunite for this release. Carnie made headlines in 1999 when she underwent gastric bypass surgery live on the internet and lost over 20 dress sizes.
Wilson Phillips reunited in 2004 to release California, an album of cover songs. A single, 'Go Your Own Way,' a remake of the original by Fleetwood Mac, peaked at #13 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The album debuted at #35 on the charts with 31,000 copies sold but due to the lack of promotion the album has yet to reach sales of 100,000 copies. In New Zealand the album was a surprise hit, reaching the top 10 and amassing gold sales following 'Go Your Own Way' topping the adult contemporary radio chart for several weeks.
The Dream is Still Alive

You and I could never forget the days
But then the fire seemed to flicker
Cold wind came and it carried us away
But we'll get back someday, baby
The dream is still alive
Look here in my eyes
The dream is still alive
The one of you and I
And my heartache is healing
I couldn't let it die
No I knew it would survive
The dream is still alive
Not so long ago in a purple haze
People dreamed out loud they were not afraid
They stopped the war but not the dying
Some got a little bit lost along the way
But somehow we're here today (And we say..)
The dream is still alive
After all this time
The flame keeps on burning
The dream is still alive
The one of you and I
And my heartache is healing
I couldn't let it die
No I knew it would survive
The dream is, the dream is still alive
Oh yeah..
The dream is still alive
Look here in my eyes
Can you see what I'm feeling
The dream is still alive
The one of you and I
And my heartache is healing
I couldn't let it die
For all the times we tried
The dream is still alive
The song "The Dream is Still Alive" by Wilson Phillips talks about a relationship that has gone through some difficulties but still has hope to revive. The lyrics speak about the past and how the two people were once deeply connected, but a sudden change in circumstances caused them to suffer and lose their way. Despite all these, there is still a glimmer of hope as they strive to restore their love to what it used to be.
The songwriter starts off by painting an image of a beautiful relationship that was once perfect, as they were in sync and had unforgettable moments. However, the fire soon started to fade and the cold wind carried them apart, but the dream still lives on. The chorus showcases the power of love and how it still burns within them, as they both hope to fix what went wrong. The second verse takes a more worldly view as it describes how people once came together in unity and fought to bring an end to war, but unfortunately, some still suffered. Nevertheless, they are thankful for being able to stand here today and still believe in their dreams.
Overall, this song's message can be interpreted as having hope despite difficult times. Relationships can go through tough times, but as long as the dream stays alive, there's always hope for reconciliation.
