Grey Garden
Windhand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to recognize this place
Now a stone to lay your youth and body down
Is it drifting in and out of space
Is it drifting in and out of space
Isn't it all a mess
Soon it will go away
Gonna put your flowers in the mu
Gonna wait and see what happens in the spring
If they're gonna die or grow
If they're gonna die I won't do anything
Isn't it all a mess
Soon it will go away
I used to recognize your face
I walk the caverns backwards into time

Is it drifting in and out of space
Am I looking for someone who's not around

Overall Meaning

In Windhand's song "Grey Garden", the lyrics evoke a sense of loss and transience. The first stanza speaks of a familiar place, now transformed into a final resting place for the body and youth. The imagery of drifting in and out of space suggests a sense of uncertainty and disorientation, as if the singer is grappling with existential questions. The repetition of "Isn't it all a mess" emphasizes the chaos and confusion of life, while the promise that it will go away suggests a desire for resolution and closure.

The second stanza shifts from the external to the internal, as the singer reflects on a lost connection. The line "I used to recognize your face" implies a sense of familiarity disrupted, while the image of walking backwards through caverns into time speaks to a desire to recapture the past. The question of whether the object of the singer's search is "drifting in and out of space" suggests a longing for something or someone beyond reach.

Overall, the song's lyrics offer a meditation on mortality and the impermanence of life, while also touching on themes of loss, nostalgia, and longing.

From an old Brit metalhead.......words fail me !!! Hauntingly awesome. On repeat constantly since getting the album 😲😲😲

post hack depression

The melodies are so haunting and so beautiful! The heavy psych is so strong too! Loving this track, very dynamic, memorable, catchy, and fucking heavy. Best music video so far too. Wow, I am excited for Eternal Return even more now.

They are pretty good heavy as hell and so smooth the way the melodlic chords come alive!!! Def a song played on endless repeat! I just discovered them a WK ago

Emilio Aymat

Yeah but the "psych" parts are subtle and not annoying like a lotta hippy garbage

BAFOMET

I so hope the rest of the album sounds like this! Such an amazing blend of enchantment, head nod and wanton longing. To arouse all these different emotions at once, what a creation.

Mike Reseigh

BAFOMET I'm sure it will. There sound is pretty consistent. I love them and they are nice people in person too. Their live sound is EPIC!

Karl Oliver

I love this. It's doom heavier than fck and beyond but with a splice of 90s british shoegaze like My Bloody Valentine or Pale Saints. It's Windhand evolving in a very wise direction without losing their ground IMO. I love Dorthia, her voice will raise the dead. And who can miss out on the David Lynch feel of the video? Great stuff.

Cue Zephyr

I love this. Just the right combination for me to get into it. Been getting into shoegaze music lately too.

Brayden Friesen

Since you released this track, I seriously can't get it out of my head. Everything about it is so perfect! That crunchy psychedelic riff riding, the nice and crisp drums, that thunderous bass, and don't even get me started on her voice. The tones blend so well together
Windhand kicks skme major ass!

A Garden Apart

Same.
