Sparrow
Windhand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I love a man, whose love is violence;
Who always comes, who goes away.
Who never brings me any flowers
To blossom in my blazing shade.

And all of his weak-heart love is lonely; our love is running out of breath.
When I wake, you cannot know me;
When I sleep, I dream of death.

Wire, Cradle, Cross and Arrow;
Mother's milk or Crone's Rage.
Mouths like Wolves, we dine like Sparrows;
There is grace in great restraint.

And all of his weak-heart love is lonely; our love is running out of breath
When I wake, you cannot know me;
When I sleep, I dream of death.

And I could not help but leave and wonder,
What spirit steals your awful head.
and I am grateful for your candor;
I could not love a better man.

‘Cause all of his weak-heart love is lonely; our love is running out of breath

When I wake, you cannot know me;
When I sleep, I dream of death."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Windhand's song Sparrow depict a tumultuous and intense relationship between two people. The singer speaks of their love for a man whose love is characterized by violence and inconsistency. He comes and goes as he pleases, never bringing her flowers to appease her. The love between these two individuals is portrayed as being on its last legs, running out of breath. The singer acknowledges that their love is weak, and it is clear that they are both struggling to maintain their connection.

The lyrics make reference to various symbols and objects that further underscore the complicated nature of the relationship. The Wire, Cradle, Cross, and Arrow are all religious symbols and suggest that despite the turbulent love, there is an element of spirituality present. The reference to Mother's Milk or Crone's Rage suggests a duality in the nurturing of the relationship. The metaphor of wolves and sparrows show how they dine like predators, but their love is delicate, requiring great restraint. The singer acknowledges that this love may be complicated, but they ultimately could not love a better man despite its hardships.

Overall, the song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of a difficult relationship, with the singer trying to come to grips with their feelings towards their partner. It speaks to the complexity and fragility of relationships, particularly those with elements of violence and co-dependency.

I remember when I first heard this song. After a messy break up I got very drunk and fell asleep with headphones on and Spotify turned on to some stoner/doom playlist. I woke up in the middle of the night and this song was playing. It was so surreal, weird and beautiful at the same time

Your future Ex
