Windir started as a one-man-band in 1994, and on the first album, Sóknardalr, Valfar plays everything except the drums himself. On Arntor Valfar decided to include more session members, but the screaming vocals, rhythm guitars, bass, synthesisers and accordion were still handled by Valfar. The third album, 1184, was written together with his friends in another Sogndal-based band, Ulcus. After this Ulcus merged with Windir, and from then on Windir presented itself as a full band. 1184 slightly changed the sound of Windir and included more electronic elements in the music. This provoked divided reactions from the fans. Likferd continued the musical style from 1184. On both 1184 and Likferd some of the lyrics are written in English. This was done in order to reach a larger audience, but also to give the music a wider spectre, and create other atmospheres.
Valfar, ein Windir is a 2-disc compilation album by Windir released in 2004. The first disc contains some new recordings, tributes, live songs, and rerecordings. The second disc is a "best of" collection. The money made with selling Valfar, ein Windir goes straight to Valfar's family. A version of the album was also released later that does not include the second disc. The bands contributing with tributes are: Enslaved, Finntroll, E-head, Notodden All Stars (Cosmocrator from MindGrinder, Samoth and Trym from Emperor/Zyklon) and Weh.
On January 14, 2004, Valfar went for a walk towards his family's cabin at Fagereggi, but he never arrived. Three days later, authorities found his body at Reppastølen in the Sogndal Valley. Valfar had been caught in a snow storm and suffered death from hypothermia. After that, the band was put to rest by the remaining members. The remaining members went their seperate ways forming two new bands; Vreid, created and headed by Hváll, and Cor Scorpii.
Final line-up:
* Valfar: Vocals, Accordion, and Additional Instruments

The Spiritlord
Windir Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It is he who reflects the will
It is he who reigns the masses
It is he who urges to win
It is he who lights the fire
It is he who controls the flame
It is he who breeds hatred
It is he who withstands pain
The endless gap
between servant and lord
will grow stronger
within us all
It is he who decides the course
It is he who takes the step
It is he who moves forward
It is he who worship himself
The endless gap
between servant and lord
will grow stronger
within us all
From order raises chaos,
In chaos there is progression,
In the ruins of man's ashes,
Sprouts the resurrection,
A dark narcissistic dimension,
A new world to come,
The end of civiliasation,
The arrival of the Spiritlord
It is he who lights the fire
It is he who controls the flame
It is he who breeds hatred
It is he who withstands pain
Altered perception a moral decay,
A feast for the vultures circling over their prey,
No care for others an individual war,
Where you are enslaved or become the Spiritlord.
BECOME THE SPIRITLORD
Altered perception a moral decay,
A feast for the vultures circling over their prey,
No care for others an individual war,
Where you are enslaved or become the Spiritlord.
The Windir song "The Spiritlord" is a powerful commentary on the dynamics of power and control which operate within society. The lyrics convey a deep understanding of the mechanisms by which one person can wield authority over others, and the ways in which this can result in a widening gap between the "servant and lord". The Spiritlord is presented as a figure who holds all the power and who reflects the will of the masses, urging them to win and to fight for their own interests. He is able to control the flame which he himself has lit, breeding hatred and withstanding pain.
Throughout the song, the lyrics suggest that this dynamic of power and control is deeply ingrained in human nature, as seen through the statement that "the endless gap between servant and lord will grow stronger within us all". This is reinforced by the suggestion that chaos and destruction will inevitably follow from order. However, the lyrics also hint at the potential for rebirth and regeneration from the ashes of this destruction. The Spiritlord is presented as a dark, narcissistic figure who represents the end of civilization, but who also offers the possibility of a new world to come.
Overall, "The Spiritlord" is a haunting and powerful exploration of the forces of power and control which operate within society, and the potentially devastating consequences of these forces. The lyrics are dense and complex, offering a rich exploration of human nature and the dynamics of power that shape our world.
