Whispering Grass
Windsor Davies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You promised me, green grass, not to tell what you heard.
Whispering Grass, say! you can't keep your word, keep your word.

Why do you whisper, green grass?
Why tell the trees what ain't so ?
Whispering Grass, the trees don't have to know.
No, No, Why tell them all your secrets?
Who kissed there long ago?
Whispering grass, the trees don't need to know.
Don't you tell it to the breeze 'cause she will tell the birds and bees
And ev'ryone will know because you told the blabbering trees
Yes, you told them once before;
It's no secret any more.
Why tell them all the old things?
They're buried under the snow.
Whispering Grass, don't tell the trees
'Cause the trees don't need to know.

Yes, you told them once before;
It's no secret any more.
Why tell them all the old things?

They're buried under the snow.
Whispering Grass, don't tell the trees

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Whispering Grass" speak to the notion of carrying secrets and the dangers of revealing them, as expressed through a metaphor of the grass whispering to the trees. The singer addresses the grass, imploring it not to reveal the secrets it has learned ("You promised me, green grass, not to tell what you heard"), but ultimately acknowledging that the grass cannot be trusted to keep its word ("Whispering Grass, say! you can't keep your word, keep your word"). The singer questions why the grass insists on whispering falsehoods to the trees ("Why tell the trees what ain't so?") and emphasizes the need for discretion in matters of the heart ("Don't you tell it to the breeze 'cause she will tell the birds and bees").

The song carries a sense of wistfulness and nostalgia, hinting at the idea of lost love and the desire for discretion and privacy in matters of the heart. The repeated refrain of "the trees don't need to know" underscores the idea that some secrets are best kept hidden, and that the singer values the importance of discretion.
