Jesus Does the Dishes
Wingnut Dishwashers Union Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're kids building models of a world
that we might wanna live in.
And sorting feelings in our stomach--
is this liberation or starvation?
But have we made it anywhere at all
if the dishes are never done?
If we can't live without dishwashers,
how could we live without cops?

And so you're asking me,
who does the dishes after the revolution?
Well, I do my own dishes now,
I'll do my own dishes then.
And it's always the ones who don't
who ask that fucking question.

So I don't believe in God,
but I'm also not an Atheist.
Because the universe is chaos,
but chaos picks favorites.
And you know lately I've been thinking about how I love Jesus
because Jesus was a dirty homeless hippie peace activist.
And he said, "Drop out and find God"
to anybody who would listen.

While turning water into space bags x3
with lowlifes and anarchists.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Wingnut Dishwashers Union's song Jesus Does the Dishes speak to current societal issues, such as the struggle for liberation, the value of manual labor, and the role of authority in our lives. The song begins with the idea that as young people, we are building a world that we want to live in, but are constantly questioning whether our efforts are leading us towards liberation or further into a state of starvation. The imagery of "sorting feelings in our stomach" is a visceral reminder of the emotional toll this struggle can take on us.

The second stanza of the song takes a more pointed approach, questioning the hypocrisy of those who advocate for revolution and social change, but can't even manage to do their own dishes. The comparison between dishwashers and cops is meant to emphasize the idea that even our most mundane tasks are imbued with political meaning. The final lines of the stanza are a call to action, to get our own houses in order before attempting to change the world.

The final stanza of the song brings together several disparate ideas - the chaos of the universe, the teachings of Jesus, and the radical activism of anarchists. The singer rejects traditional religious labels like Atheist, but still finds inspiration in the teachings of Jesus - specifically, the idea that divinity can be found in the most unexpected places, like a "dirty homeless hippie peace activist". The image of Jesus turning water into space bags (a nod to his biblical miracle of turning water into wine) while surrounded by "lowlifes and anarchists" solidifies the idea that true change and liberation can only occur when we reject the cultural mores that keep us in cages.

Line by Line Meaning

We're kids building models of a world that we might wanna live in.
As young people, we are exploring ideas and experimenting with concepts that could shape the kind of world we would like to exist in.

And sorting feelings in our stomach-- is this liberation or starvation?
We are trying to figure out if our attempts to break free and create a better world are genuine efforts towards liberation or actions motivated by the fear of starving under the oppressive capitalist system.

But have we made it anywhere at all if the dishes are never done?
If we fail to carry out the basic tasks of everyday life, then we have not truly progressed or achieved any meaningful transformation in our pursuit for change.

If we can't live without dishwashers, how could we live without cops?
If we can't even handle the simple task of washing our dishes without relying on a machine, then how can we truly imagine living in a world without the systemic oppression enforced by regulations and law enforcement?

And so you're asking me, who does the dishes after the revolution?
After the revolution, there will be no division of labor or class hierarchy, so the question of who is responsible for washing the dishes would no longer matter.

Well, I do my own dishes now, I'll do my own dishes then.
I am fully capable of taking care of my own responsibilities regardless of the social structure, so there is no reason to assume that the revolution would change that.

And it's always the ones who don't who ask that fucking question.
The people who refuse to carry out any productive work would be the ones asking who would do the dishes after the revolution, as they are trying to avoid responsibility and perpetuate the idea of a hierarchy.

So I don't believe in God, but I'm also not an Atheist.
I don't subscribe to religious dogma, but I don't reject the possibility of spiritual philosophies either.

Because the universe is chaos, but chaos picks favorites.
Although the universe appears to be a result of random and unpredictable events, certain outcomes still seem to occur more often than others, suggesting that the idea of fate or divine intervention could exist.

And you know lately I've been thinking about how I love Jesus because Jesus was a dirty homeless hippie peace activist.
I appreciate Jesus as a radical figure who rejected materialism and actively advocated for peace, love, and equality despite being ostracized by society.

And he said, "Drop out and find God" to anybody who would listen.
Jesus believed in the power of self-discovery and encouraged people to step away from societal norms and expectations in order to explore their own spirituality and purpose.

While turning water into space bags x3 with lowlifes and anarchists.
Jesus performed miracles while surrounded by a community of outcasts and rebels who were marginalized by mainstream society.

"The universe is chaos, but chaos plays favorites." Best line in my opinion.

@edwinw8468

Pretty sure he says "Chaos licks favorites." From other versions it's clearly "Chaos picks favorites." I think he just had a tongue twister.
