You Gave Me the Answer
Wings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You Gave Me The Answer
To Love Eternally.
I Love You And - You,
You Seem To Like Me.
Wherever We Wander
The Local Folk Agree,
I Love You And - You,
You Seem To Like Me.

Heading Back To Old Familiar Places,
Places Where The Cobwebs Blow Away
I Can Forget The Airs And Graces

Terpsichory . . . . . . .

You'll Never Be Crowned By
The Aristocracy,
To Their Delight, You'd Merely Invite
Them In For A Cup Of Tea . . . . And
I Love You And - You
You Seem To Like
You Seem To Like

You Seem To Like
Me.

Overall Meaning

In "You Gave Me the Answer," Wings sings about a love that is built to last forever. The song begins with an acknowledgment of the strength of their bond, exemplified by the singer's confidence in their love. However, the lyrics' real essence lies in the mutual nature of the singers' feelings. The singer expresses gratitude for their lover, who seems to reciprocate their passion. The chorus repeats this sentiment twice, emphasizing the mutual bond between the lovers.

The second verse speaks of returning to familiar places, where they can let go of their pretensions and be themselves. Terpsichore, the muse of dance and choral lyrics, is also mentioned, indicating how the couple's bond has the power to inspire joy and creativity. Despite the potential for their love to be a source of envy or class division, the singer emphasizes that his lover's love is all that matters. Even if the aristocrats fail to recognize their relationship's worth, he is content as long as his lover returns his affections.

Overall, "You Gave Me the Answer" presents a classic message of love and devotion. The song emphasizes that the strength of the bond depends on the reciprocity of feelings, and that real love can thrive in familiarity and simplicity.

And suddenly I'm transported into an old nightclub in Heaven, where all is gloriously black and white and absolutely beautiful.

I'm wearing a white tuxedo, with a white rose pinned to it, and I don't need glasses anymore, and the aches in my heart and hips have somehow disappeared, and somehow I know they'll be gone forever.

Around me are seated all my family members (even the ones I never met), and my Irish grandfather spots me in the audience...and he smiles and winks at me.

When the lights dim, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers come out (of course it had to be them), and they dedicate the day and the night to me, and everyone applauds my arrival, and I can only weep with surprise and magnificent, silent joy.

And then they dance. They dance to a band of angels whose perfect music rings through the universe, and there is a gasp of surprise as the dancers' feet leave the floor, and they dance over the stage, and over the heads' of the audience, and through the disappearing ceiling, and into the universe, and among the stars and among the galaxies, and, much too soon, they land softly on the stage once again, and bow to the audience, and to the universe, and all is silent until we and all the universe applaud the miraculous thing we all just saw.

And then my dog jumps into my lap (my God, he's here too!), and he's wearing a white bowtie around his neck, and he whispers into my ear, "I missed you so much...seventy years is a long time to wait for someone you love. And now, we'll always be together...because when I left you, I made a silent promise to love you forever, and I told you I would see you again. Did you hear my promise? And do you remember?"

"Yes," I said. "I heard you, and I remember. How could I forget? It was the worst day of my life...and you gave me hope, when I had none."

"Well," he said, "all dogs keep their promises, and I'm keeping my promise to you." And then he looked around, and he tucked his head into my neck (just like he did, seventy years ago), and he said, "I think you're gonna like it here. This is the place where all your questions are answered."

"All of them?" I asked.

"All of them," he said. "Why do think I arranged this song for you? Now, take off that tux, and let's go out and play...and play...and play...for ever...and ever...and ever."

A single, silent tear dropped from my eye...and he licked it from my face...just like he did, seventy years ago.

"But we have to be back here by eight o'clock. There's a Beatles concert tonight...in honor of your arrival...and we have front row tickets."

I looked at him in disbelief, and he just hugged me, and whispered into my ear, "Shhhh...let's go out and play. It's time."

And we did.

Paul was the most fun Beatle, can you imagine any of the other Beatles writing something like this,no,only Paul, the others were to serious with their music and that's why besides his immense talent Paul McCartney's my favorite Beatle,Paul McCartney's fun! Bob.

Good9tTo9t

All of them had fun in their own ways.

Yes indeed, and that's why the Beatles as a band were so great, the variety within. But, as you say, Paul's songs were so varied that he really widened their appeal. "Honey Pie", "Your Mother Should Know" and "When I'm 64" were in this style. People often wrongly assume that "Honey Pie" was a cover of an old 20s song, such was its perfection and likeness to that era.

WOOLTON

Approved ! lol

I often enjoyed when Paul recorded a retro-sounding tune, such as "Your Mother Should Know" on the Magical Mystery Tour album, and of course "Your Gave Me the Answer", where he sings like Rudy Vallee. This is always a fun little ditty to have appeared on "Venus and Mars".

Martha, my dear, when I'm 64, I will call you honey pie and what will you call me?
Martha: Woof, woof!

I love these old fashioned tunes Paul created... I'd heard the White Album's "Martha my Dear" in Brazil when I was 8 yrs old... I loved it! Now I'm almost 58 and living overseas, but this and other Beatles songs are part of my history.
