In Your Hands
Winston Charlie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mother
I've gotta get out of here
So I can save our family
From this poverty
And when I make my money
I'll send it back to you

Father
Give me strength, I pray
I have to end this misery
It's causing too much pain
I'm gonna look for richer lands
Where the money's made

I'm gonna put my whole World
In your hands
I have to put my whole World
In your hands
In your hands

Mister
Please let me work somehow
You've kept me waiting 18 months
And still I'm not allowed
And every time you promise me
"Not much longer now"

I've had to put my whole world
In your hands
I'm gonna put my whole world
In your hands
In your hands

Hey, hey, oho
Listen, listen to me

Mister! Mister! You say you're trying
But don't you know my brother's dying
You say "it won't be long"
But why am I so cursed
For where I am born?
I know

You've got my whole world
In your hands
I've had to put my whole world
In your hands
I'm gonna put my whole world
In your hands
I've had to put my whole world

In your hands
In your hands

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Winston Charlie's song "In Your Hands" touch upon themes of poverty and desperation, as well as the desire to escape from those circumstances. The song is a lamentation of a person who is trying to make a better life for themselves and their family but is facing numerous obstacles in doing so. The opening lines of the song are addressed to the singer's mother, expressing their desire to leave their current situation in order to earn money and help their family out of poverty. It is a statement of his/her determination to change their circumstances and a promise to take care of their family once they make it big.

The second verse is addressed to the singer's father. It has a more urgent tone and expresses a sense of responsibility to end the misery, which is causing too much pain. The singer wants to move to richer lands and change their fortunes, but again, their aspirations and dreams are limited by the circumstances of their birth.

The third verse is addressed to "Mister." The singer is pleading with the person in power to give them a chance to work and earn money. The waiting period of 18 months and numerous promises of an imminent job highlights the desperation of the situation. The chorus of the song is the singer entrusting their hopes and dreams, their whole world, to the person in power, in the hope that their hard work and promises will be fulfilled.

The emotions in the song are raw and poignant, and the lyrics reflect the frustration and helplessness of those stuck in poverty. It is a song that highlights the struggle of those who are trying their best to make a better life for themselves, but are limited by circumstances beyond their control.

I've known this song since I was a young teen, but as a French native with approximate English, I never really understood the lyrics entirely until tonight.

Life was already tough back then, but I didn't understand poverty as much as I do now. Tonight I listened to this and cried, not much for me, but for those I love.

Take care of yourselves, and do what you can afford to, to dismantle capitalism keeping so many of us in this.

Once upon a time Peter Gabriel recommended Charlie Winston. Went to see him in NYC. I was blown away.
His music is meaningful, truthful and full of energy, carrying you from one important place to another. I lost the connection for a while, but now so happy to be reconnecting, and to catch up with some new inspiring stuff.
