Wintersleep are a part of Dependent Music, a music label/collective that began in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in 1994.

Their music style is rooted in indie rock and has ambient and occasional shoegaze elements. Performances have been described as "entirely honest" and "deeply moving" with "captivating ambiance". While playing live, the band attempts to make the listener as much a part of the music as the band themselves by encouraging everyone to sing along.
They were nominated for two Juno Awards of 2008 and took home one of them: Alternative Album of the Year, and New Group of the Year (which they won).

The lyrics to Wintersleep's "Baltic" speak to the transformative power of nature's elements and the way in which they can alter our sense of self and our understanding of the world around us. The opening line, "You're a righteous woman," sets the tone for a message of empowerment and self-discovery, as we are invited to let the breeze brush off our backs and embrace the freedom that comes from being in tune with the natural world.
The song's chorus ("Let it out, let it out / Let it out of my head") speaks to the need to let go of our worries and anxieties and allow ourselves to be carried away by the moment. We are reminded that we are all just "tongues and shoulder blades," vulnerable creatures seeking connection and meaning in a world that often seems chaotic and confusing. Through this connection with nature, we can find a sense of reflection and renewal that allows us to "deconstruct and reconstruct" ourselves in the image of something new and beautiful.
Overall, "Baltic" is a powerful and evocative song that speaks to the importance of finding solace and renewal in the natural world. Its lyrics are both deeply personal and universally relatable, inviting us all to embrace the transformative power of wind, water, and sunlight in our own lives.
