Fog
Wintersleep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
These ruptured lungs won't make a sound
These syllables won't bring you back,
Won't stitch the holes, no bones intact
and I can't pretend that you were there
And I can't pretend I held your hand
And I miss your smile
I need you now
I need you now
And I am not scared of falling down
I am not scared of dark dark clouds
I miss your smile
I miss your smile
I need you now
I need you now
The lyrics to Wintersleep's song Fog convey a sense of loss and longing. The first verse describes physical limitations that prevent the singer from being able to hold onto or connect with someone they have lost. The second verse then reveals the emotional toll of that loss as the singer admits to missing the person's smile and needing them in the present moment. Despite the sadness present in these lyrics, there is also a sense of strength and resilience. The singer is not afraid to fall or to face dark times, suggesting a willingness to endure even in the face of great loss.
One interesting fact about Fog is that it was released as a single in 2012 but actually first appeared on the band's 2010 album New Inheritors. The song was later included on Wintersleep's 2013 album Hello Hum with updated production. Fog has become one of the band's most popular and enduring tracks, earning critical acclaim and garnering millions of streams.
Another fact about the song is that it was inspired in part by the death of Wintersleep's former drummer, Loel Campbell's father. According to the band, Campbell wrote the music for the song in 10 minutes after attending his father's funeral. The lyrics were then added later by lead singer Paul Murphy. The powerful emotional resonance of the song can be felt in both the music and the lyrics.
Fog has also been featured in several television shows, including Grey's Anatomy and Rookie Blue. The song's haunting melody and evocative lyrics make it a fitting choice for scenes of loss or introspection.
Musically, Fog features a driving drumbeat, mournful guitar chords, and stirring strings. The interplay between these elements creates a sense of urgency and tension that mirrors the song's emotional themes.
In terms of chord structure, Fog employs a relatively simple progression that highlights the song's melody and lyrics. The opening lines are played over a G chord, with the second and third lines following the pattern of D-C-G. The chorus then moves to a C chord before resolving back to G.
Overall, Wintersleep's Fog is a beautiful and poignant song that speaks to the universal experience of grief and loss. With its stirring melody, heartfelt lyrics, and simple yet powerful chord progression, it has become a modern classic in the indie rock canon.
Chords (capo 3):
Verse: G, D, C, G
Chorus: C, G, D, C, G
