Death and the Healing
Wintersun Lyrics

Death And The Healing

A windstorm dropped a bird from the sky
It fell to the ground and it's wings broke and died
But when the time got by, back to sky it flied
'cause the wings healed in time and the bird was I

Time is the death and the healing
Take your last breath, 'cause death is deceiving
Time is the past, now and tomorrow
Days fly so fast and it leaves me so hollow

A snowstorm blew inside a wolf's eyes
And the frozen tears covered all the mountainsides

But then the time got by and the wolf died
And someday that wolf would be I

Overall Meaning

The song "Death and the Healing" by Wintersun is a poignant and thought-provoking track that explores themes of mortality, the passage of time, and the cyclical nature of life and death. The lyrics describe a bird that falls from the sky and breaks its wings, but eventually heals and flies again. This bird is a metaphor for the human experience, as we all face challenges and hardships but can eventually overcome them and find new strength and resilience.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the duality of time, which can be both a source of healing and of death. The lyrics warn us not to be deceived by the inevitability of death, and to make the most of our time while we still have it. The verses describe a wolf who dies in a snowstorm, but suggests that this wolf may one day be reborn as the singer. This cyclical nature of death and rebirth is a common theme in many spiritual and philosophical traditions, and suggests that even though we may die, we are also capable of being reborn and experiencing new life and opportunities.

Overall, "Death and the Healing" is a deeply reflective and introspective song that encourages listeners to contemplate the mysteries of life and the nature of mortality. Through its powerful lyrics and haunting melody, Wintersun invites us to confront our fears of death and embrace the healing power of time.

For me, Starchild holds that spot. But this is a (very) close second.

I listened to this song in 2012 for the first time and that year was one of the worst years of my life. I had to get a surgery that had very little chance of full recovery and I used to listen to this song all day long because it inspired me and helped me get back to life just like that broken bird. I had no regrets because I knew one day I will be that wolf. Death is nothing but a transition of our spirit.

After all these years, I still live in this song the same way. Thank you Jari and thanks Wintersun for death and the healing. Love from a Bangladeshi living in Toronto.
