The four members of the band are Judith Holofernes, Jean-Michel Tourette, Mark Tavassol and Pola Roy. They met during the Kontaktstudiengang Popmusik, a study program in Hamburg, Germany.
The group released four studio albums: Die Reklamation (2003), Von hier an blind (2005), Soundso (2007) and, finally, Bring mich nach Hause (2010).
It was a band tradition to play a concert in the German town of Helden as part of every tour.
In April 2012 the band announced its 'indefinite hiatus'.

The song "Die Nacht" by Wir sind Helden talks about the simple yet enchanting moments of the night. The lyrics advise us to turn off the lights but not necessarily to go to sleep. Instead, we are asked to stand by the window and gaze at the wonders of the night. The first verse describes how the moon has built itself a telescope or a pair of binoculars to view the singer's bedroom. This is an excellent metaphor for how the night seemingly stares at us while we sleep. The chorus tells us that the night revolves around us and how it wants to be with us even during the day. However, despite its captivating allure, we sleep right through its beauty. The next verse talks about how the wind, which seems harmless when let in, can cause trouble for us. It is a metaphorical reference to how often we let things into our lives without considering the consequences.
