Skyfall
Within Temptation Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is the end
Hold your breath and count to ten
Feel the Earth move again
Hear my heart burst again

For this is the end
I've drowned and dreamt this moment
So overdue I owe them
Swept away, I'm stolen

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At Skyfall
At Skyfall

Skyfall is where we start
A thousand miles and poles apart
Where worlds collide and days are dark
You may have my number, you can take my name
But you'll never have my heart

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At Skyfall

Where you go I go
What you see I see
I know I'd never be me
Without the security
Of your loving arms
Keeping me from harm
Put your hand in my hand
And we'll stand

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together

Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it all together
At Skyfall

We will stand tall

When it crumbles
At Skyfall

Overall Meaning

The song "Skyfall" by Within Temptation has a lot of symbolism and meaning packed into its lyrics. At its core, the song is about the end of the world, with the sky falling and everything crumbling. It begins with the singer telling the listener to hold their breath and count to ten, as if letting them know that something big and scary is about to happen. The singer then talks about how they've dreamed of this moment and how they owe something to someone, before being swept away and stolen. The symbolism of drowning helps convey the sense of being overwhelmed, while the idea of dreaming this moment adds a layer of fatalism.

The chorus of the song is what really sticks in the listener's mind, with its soaring melody and powerful lyrics. It's an anthem of defiance, with the band declaring that no matter what happens, they will stand tall and face it all together. This imagery is powerful in its simplicity, and the repeated refrain of "Let the sky fall" emphasizes the idea of facing up to something huge and catastrophic. The song doesn't shy away from the darkness, but instead embraces it, taking comfort in the fact that no matter what happens, they won't be alone.

Overall, "Skyfall" is a powerful song that speaks to the human need for connection and strength in times of crisis. It's a call to arms, urging the listener to face up to the end of the world with courage and determination.

I absolutely love that Within Temptation have done so many covers of songs from a number of very different genres to their own, and just owned them. Not only does that take skill, but it's such a breath of fresh air, that a band doesn't just stick to one genre; they're not sitting inside that box we've put them in, and they're showing their love for other songs and artists.
