Dreaming With Our Eyes Open
Witt Lowry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stuck in the same room
In the same mood
Everybody tried to tell me
What I can't do
Everybody tried to tell me
That I've changed too
And I changed lanes from you
Lame dudes
It's been a minute since I spilled my pain
Had to take a step back
And look at life in a different way
If you want the change
You gotta be the change
Now we're all the same
Nobody wanna take the reins
Nobody wanna push their brain
Nobody will admit that they're fake
For the facts they claim
You see we're all imperfect
In a perfect way
And while we work all day
We're all work no play
We're slaved in a loans
And the bills we pay
You consume a double cheese
When the radio play
Mainstream, Mickey D's
And my shit gourmet
I've been up for 7 days straight
Tryna figure out my fate
Tryna figure out anyway
To put food on my plate
But I sold a few tee's
So I'm eating today
Okay, doing okay
Could probly do better
Came home to a letter, eviction
I know I don't fit your description
A rapper
But me I'm a clearer
They threw all the cheddar
I know, everything that glitter ain't gold
Life is a clay
You too busy to mold
Time here is takin' it's toll
We spend all our time without passion
And then we get old
Was told, I should go quit
But none of you see all the letters
I get from these kids
Who hurt from within
And don't wanna live
And tell me my music
Is all that can give them hope
Yeah, all we need is some hope
And they tell me their family is broken and broke
They usin' my music to cope
I been on that boat
Held down by a rope
Held down by a string
Ya'll lookin' for things
I'm lookin' to change the perception
Of people and all of the beautiful things that it brings

Yeah, record in my closet
Don't make enough profit
Ya'll used to have morals
And somehow you lost it
Don't care about the money
I spend on my coffin
I care bout the people attendin' in nothin'
We're lost
Lost in this world
We're selfish to think
I can find happiness in a girl
We're selfish to think we're elite
We destroy and deplete
I hope plan and no smarter than squirrels
So who wants to talk about that
Who wants to talk about facts
Maybe I'd be in your mag
If I added "tenchit ababbap"
Oh I talked about weed when I rap
But fuck all of that
The voice of the youth
The voice of the people
The real and the truth
The voice of the one
Who had nothing to lose
I speak for a heart that's been
Broken and beaten and bruised
I'm tired of holes in my shoes
Tired of having to move
Tired of coming unglued
Tired of cleaning your table
And serving your food
We are what we choose
If only you knew, the shit that I've seen
I can't tell if I'm lucid or living the dream
I don't do it for me, do it all for the team
I remember back living, when I was a teen
And my grandma she said I was worthless
And my teacher said I had no purpose
And my mom she said I sas perfect
And Im sitting on Tw¡tter
While I should be working on verses
You're worth it
And why you feel weak
The deeper the trench
The higher the peak
See ya'll are a piece of my legacy
Cause you believe we can be anything

And I wanna be,
Me

Overall Meaning

In the first stanza of Witt Lowry's song Dreaming With Our Eyes Open, he talks about feeling stuck in the same room with the same mood. People around him have told him what he can't do and that he has changed too much. Witt Lowry decides to change lanes and leave behind lame people who don't encourage growth. He believes that to make a change, one must be the change. However, he feels that nobody wants to take the reins or push their brain to achieve something. People claim to be true and imperfect in a perfect way, but they are more focused on work than play, and they are slaves to loans and bills. Mainstream things like fast food, music, and claims that aren't real, people prefer them over gourmet things. Witt Lowry has been up for seven days, trying to figure out his purpose and how to put food on his plate. But he sold a few tee's, so he is eating okay. He believes that everything that glitters isn't gold, and people are busy to mold their life into something beautiful.

In the second stanza, Witt Lowry talks about how he records his music in his closet and doesn't make enough money for his profit. He feels that people have lost their morals and don't care about others. He says that he doesn't care about the money he spends on his coffin but cares more about the people who attend his funeral. He thinks that people are lost in this world and believe that happiness lies within a girl or being elite. However, they destroy and deplete the world's resources, making us no smarter than squirrels. Witt Lowry speaks about being the voice of the youth, the real and the truth, and speaks for those who have nothing to lose. He feels tired of holes in his shoes, coming unglued, and serving people food. Witt Lowry believes that people are worth more and should know the things he's seen, and he speaks out for his legacy.

Six or seven years later, and his music is able to be kept so perfectly preserved. His track, rhythm and voice are just so uncomfortably raw and unique that there’s nothing else like it. Every time I listen, it sounds like a new song.

ahh this is exactly why i came back to this vid after so many years

Here I am in 2020, reminiscing in the memories that this song evokes. They're sad memories, yet hopeful. How poetic and ironic.
