A Voice of Hope
Woe Is Me Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who are you?
Who do you think you are?
Your opinion means nothing
Your words are shallow and you'll get what you deserve
Get what you deserve

Isn't it funny
How life works in such
Mysterious ways,
Mysterious way?

All my life, I've been waiting for this moment
To live free and be me
All my life, I have always fallen short
But not this time, not this time
All my life, I've been waiting for answer
All my life

You couldn't stop me even if you wanted to
It's plain to see, I wanna be
A voice of hope and not the voice of a dying breed
And finally I'm doing what I wanna do
I've never felt so free in my whole life
There's nothing I would trade for
This is what I was made for

I won't be held back by failure (failure)

It's easy to lose yourself completely
To become your own worst enemy
Yeah, yeah

Don't try to tell me how to live my life
Don't try to justify what's wrong and what's right
Let's put it this way
I've been doing this for far too long
To give up everything I've worked for
I've made my deals and cut my losses

For you it's all about the money (money)
For you it's all about the fame
And how you play the game

You couldn't stop me even if you wanted to
It's plain to see, I wanna be
A voice of hope and not the voice of a dying breed
And finally I'm doing what I wanna do
I've never felt so free in my whole life
There's nothing I would trade for
This is what I was made for (made for)

Cause at the end of the day
We're all just trying to make a way
For ourselves, for ourselves

And I'm giving everything that I have left inside of me
Your words are meaningless
Cause I'm above the negativity

So take these words and hold them close

It's not about where you are right now
But where you wanna be that matters most

Overall Meaning

The song A Voice of Hope by Woe Is Me is a powerful assertion of self-determination that pours scorn on naysayers and encourages listeners to hold fast to their dreams. The opening lyrics suggest that the singer is being criticized or belittled by someone, but insists that the opinions of others don't matter, and that they will get what they "deserve". This could be interpreted in different ways - it might be that the singer is being bullied or dismissed by a rival, or that they feel they are being held back by someone who doesn't understand or value their ambitions. Whatever the case, the song is a rallying cry for the underdog who wants to prove their worth.

The chorus delivers the song's main message: that the singer has been waiting for their chance to "live free and be me". They feel that "all my life, I've always fallen short," but that now they have the confidence to pursue what they want. The defiance of this statement is echoed in the repeating refrain: "you couldn't stop me even if you wanted to." The song encourages listeners to hold firm against those who doubt them, and to believe in themselves even when they have failed in the past.

The song contains some powerful metaphors, such as the comparison of life to a "mysterious" process that works in unexpected ways. This could suggest that the singer has experienced setbacks or twists of fate that have led them to this point. The metaphor of being a "voice of hope" rather than a "dying breed" could also be interpreted in different ways; it might refer to a musical or artistic subculture, or to a more general feeling that society is in decline. Either way, the message is one of defiance and hope.

I still support Woe, Is Me. I've kept with them since Numbers and I still support the guys through all the changes, they just haven't made a song to hook me yet, I get the: "They're a jack of all trades, a master of none." feeling, but I have faith!
