Wolf Parade released their eponymous debut EP in 2003 with only Spencer, Dan and Arlen performing on it. After Hadji joined the group, they released another independent, self-titled EP in 2004. They were signed to Sub Pop by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse and released their first widely-distributed record, Wolf Parade EP. In September 2005 their debut album Apologies to the Queen Mary was released.
Apologies to the Queen Mary was given this name because, as in rock and roll tradition, Wolf Parade trashed the Queen Mary hotel. It was said that they trashed the hotel worse than any band before them.
Their second album, At Mount Zoomer, was released June 17, 2008, and third, Expo 86 on July 5, 2010. On November 29th 2010 Wolf Parade called an indefinite hiatus.
The haitus ended when the band released Cry Cry Cry on Oct 6, 2017.
Modern World
Wolf Parade Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm not in love with the modern world
It was a torch driving the savages back to the trees
Modern world has modern ways
And I don't mention it since it's changed
While the people go out and the people come home again
And a lifetime of red skies
And from my bed, saying you're haunted, hissing in my bed
Modern world don't ask why
Cause modern world will build things high
Now they house canyons filled with life
Modern world, I'm not pleased to meet you
You just bring me down
Modern world, I'm not pleased to meet you
You just bring me down
Modern world, I'm not pleased to meet you
You just bring me down
Modern world, I'm not pleased to meet you
You just bring me down
The lyrics of "Modern World" by Wolf Parade seem to express a sense of disillusionment and disappointment with the world and how it has evolved in modern times. The repetition of the phrase "I'm not in love with the modern world" emphasizes the singer's lack of affection for the present era. The line "It was a torch driving the savages back to the trees" suggests that the technological advancements of the modern world have had detrimental effects on nature and humanity's relationship with it.
The contrast between the old and the new is also highlighted in the second verse, where the singer acknowledges the changes in the world but doesn't mention them because of the way they've altered things. They watch as people come and go, living their daily lives in a world that seems to be constantly transforming, leaving no room for stability or permanence. The lines "It's gotta last to build up your eyes/And a lifetime of red skies" imply that the drastic changes of the modern world are not only overwhelming but also damaging to one's wellbeing.
Overall, the song portrays the modern world as a cold and uncaring place that only serves to bring the singer down. It is likely that the lyrics are a commentary on the negative effects of technological advancements, which have altered our lifestyles, relationships, and environment in ways that are difficult to navigate and understand.
