Overture
Wolf Patrick Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's wonderful what a smile can hide
If the teeth shine bright and it's nice and wide
It's so magical all you can keep inside
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no

So come on now, open wide, open up now
Don't you think it's time
To look back at that boy on his way to school
Such a heavy heart, such a heavy jewel hiding Something that one day he'll sell
But now if no one shows, no one tells a thing, no

So come on love, open wide, open up now
Don't you think it's time

Now after all these years you are at last opening was it
Worth all that war just to win
So caught up in the speed of the days in your sin
Don't forget how the story begins no
Don't forget now

Now I'm seeing all your lovers and enemies
They've been turning their keys so full of need
All trying to see that sure you keep
What makes it shine, what makes it mine
But I don't care, no

Just come on now, open wide, open up now
There's so much love for what you'll find
But what will you find

Now after all these years you are at last opening
Was it worth all that war just to win

If it was can you take me back to where it begins
Come and take me back to where it begins
Come and take me back to where it begins
Come on, open wide and let some light in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Wolf Patrick's song "Overture" delve into the idea of hiding one's true emotions and experiences behind a facade of cheerfulness and positivity. The opening lines suggest that it's amazing that a smile can conceal so much pain and suffering. The singer goes on to describe a personal experience from their past, referencing a heavy burden or secret that they carried with them. They reveal that they buried this experience deep inside, so that no one would ever know of it. However, they imply that it's time to stop hiding and to allow oneself to be vulnerable and open.

The lyrics later shift to a more introspective tone, with the singer asking if the war they fought to win was worth it. There's a sense of regret and longing to return to a simpler, less complicated time. The singer expresses a feeling of detachment from the world around them, observing their lovers and enemies from a distance. They seem to be questioning the value of the things that people hold onto so tightly, and instead, inviting them to let in love and light.

It's wonderful what a smile can hide,
If the teeth shine right and it's nice and wide,
It's so magical, all you can keep inside,
And if you bury it deep no one can find a thing, no.

So come on now, open wide, open up now.
Don't you think it's time;
To look back at that boy on his way to school,
Such a heavy heart, such a heavy jewel. hiding something that one day he'll sell,
But now if no one asks, no one tells a thing, no.

So come on love, open wide, open up now,
Don't you think it's time?

Now after all these years you are at last opening,
Was it worth all that war just to win?
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin,
Don't forget how your story begins,
Don't forget now!

Now I'm seeing-- all your lovers and enemies,
They've been turning their keys so full of greed,
All trying to see what jewel you keep,
What makes it shine, what makes it mine,
But I don't care.

Come on now, open wide.
Open up now.
Don't you think it's time?

Now after all these tears you are at last opening,
Was it worth all that war just to win?
So caught up in the speed and the weight of your sin.
Don't forget how your story begins, oh!
Don't forget now!

Take me back to where it begins.
Before the speed and weight of your sin,
Come and take me back to where it begins.

Before the speed and weight of your sin,
Come on, take me back to where it begins, now!

Is it worth all that war just to win.
Hey!
Come on, take me back to where it begins,
Come on, open wide and let some love, in.

This album still means so much to me, after all this time.

Saw him perform the Sundark and Riverlight style tracks in a church. The acoustics for the violin and harp were just breath taking. He was absolulty brilliant interspersing his songs with poetry and a little chat. He was so shy and nervous when he first came on and apologised whenever he was tweaking instruments saying we would never come back again. So rare to find someone with so much talent so humble. He was just brilliant and this track, this version is my favourite. It's gorgeous and gives me shivers.

Oh i agree with every word you wrote. I also saw him on this sundark and riverlight tour back then and it was beautiful. The instruments..the voice...

@Lois Sadler I saw him at Union Chapel in Islington, back in December '13 for his "A Night of Winter" concert - definitely the best live music performance I've ever been to. He was a complete extrovert at that concert though, making jokes about everything from faulty computers to tea towels! Must depend what day you catch him on.

Sundark and Riverlight: taking beautiful songs from 2002-2012 and making them even more beautiful.

I love this version more than the original, way more enthralling...

Surely it's "if the teeth shine bright," not "right."
