Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".

Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.

While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

The fact that you put Mendelssohn over Tchaikovsky makes me cringe so hard. I'm sorry, Mozart is objectively miles superior to Mendelssohn, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff.

The problem is that we simplify history. Beethoven didn't 'invent' Romanticism. Romantic ideals were there long before Beethoven was even born. Romantic music is just music that's often programmatic and puts emphasis on subjectivity, emotionality, dramaticism, and expressiveness. The romantic period marks the time where romantic ideals were most prevalent in music-making. It's the point of time where people liked music this way.

It's not an invention from Beethoven. Beethoven merely contributed to its popularity. And he wasn't the only one.

Beethoven wasn't even fully romantic.

Don't lie to yourself. Mozart is also incredibly daring as an innovator.

The good cheer, the depth, the humor. In the 3rd mvt. He sets up the cadencial trill- where the orchestra is supposed to come in after the cadenza ( solo piano time) and… it doesn’t- he sets up ANOTHER trill.. and the orchestra still doesn’t come in, then it sneaks in. What a trickster - just amazing to this day!

totally agree... love this 2nd movement a lot(other epic ones are 23s, 22th and 20th, to name a few). rich with wistful melancholy and farewell considering this is the last piano concerto of Mozart... the melody is quite simple, reminding me of the primitive notes in his early sonatas, yet with transitions and harmonies to render a reluctance of not letting go(the restrained use of repetition is especially evocative)...

Mozart shows depth of feeling and bold originality in his last two symphonies, in his Piano Concertos #s 21 through 24 and in his last two masses--and elsewhere, of course (such as his late quintets and piano sonatas). I'm always amazed when people compare him to later composers and speak of his supposed lack of these qualities.

It is very beautiful and very hard to play at the same time. The development in the first mov. is very complicated, and the pizz passage by the strings as the piano "opens" the music, let us think that the piece is much further than a Mozart Concerto.

The "whole" Mozart Piano concertos should we actually know. They are all very interesting in their Art, even "Jeunehomme" nr 9 piano concerto, is a early Work of the Master, but still a great Achievement of the Mankind.

He wouldn't have. Beethoven was more courageous in his compositions and it took courage and a level of irreverence for the old to create works to the level of Beethoven. Not to take away from Mozart's works. Had he lived longer, of course he would have produced more masterpieces within the framework of the classical period. But would he have broken new ground like Beethoven? I doubt it.

Even though Beethoven said himself that Mozart was a better composer it doesn't change the fact that his innovations inspired the Romantic movement and a new way of composition. I love both for different reasons and both have survived the test of time.

@Robert Hunt Nonsense. Mozart's increased lifespan would have only meant that he'd be set in his ways - ways that were already established by 35. He's have composed more memorable melodies, sure. But innovation as a musical ability does not require being a "good" melodic writer and there are composers who came after him that far exceeded him in melodic aptitude, such as Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak and possibly the best of all: Mendelssohn. Mozart simply does not have Beethoven's fire and daring, and quite frankly, humanist ideals. And that's what ultimately brought about the innovations in Beethoven's music that ushered in the Romantic Period.

Because in the classical era there was a custom for the pianist in a concerto to play bass or fundamental tones, accompanying cellos, and sometimes to build a convenient chords based on that fundamental tones. The tradition faded away during the early 19th century.

Most of Mozarts works were comissioned works. The audience expected a certain style. Mozart writes in a letter that especially for the piano concertos he tried to find a style which is not intellectual overstraining the audience too much and at the same time has a lot Musical substance. Its interesting that almost all works of him which were not commissioned sound VERY different. Listen to his c minor fantasy and sonata for example. Also the c minor mass or the d minor quartet. Whenever he wanted Mozart could write in a style way ahead of his time. He was an absolute genius.

@@ilyasnm837 I find Mozart to be repetitive in most of his music. If you have listened to his music as much as I have it is fairly predictable., particularly the piano concertos. Even 27 uses Alberti left hand at times. I could be just over exposed to his work.
I have always found Haydn to be far more original and far less predictable.

@JuanRamonSilva I find this piece, at harmonic level, sounds more experimental, more like late Mozart, and not at all like his other concertos or the piano works anyone else was writing at the same time. How often in Mozart's time did composers use tritone modulations like the F major to b minor in the development of the first movement of this concerto or the amount of chromatic dissonance throughout(like cellos and double bass playing d-flat against the descending D to C natural in the first violins at 1:02)? People are allowed to like and dislike what they please but if someone thinks this piece sounds like everything else Mozart wrote, I'm tempted to suspect they're not listening very carefully.
