Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition resulted in more than 800 works of virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral repertoire. Mozart is widely regarded as among the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".
Born in Salzburg, then in the Holy Roman Empire and currently in Austria, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. His father took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position.
While visiting Vienna in 1781, Mozart was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He stayed in Vienna, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years there, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas. His Requiem was largely unfinished by the time of his death at the age of 35, the circumstances of which are uncertain and much mythologized.

This has the most equal movement distribution in time that I have heard in like any concerto I’ve listened to. Even Piano Concerto no. 21 in C major does not have as equal of a distribution in time. And Beethoven’s concertos are by all means heavily weighted on the first movement when it comes to the length of the movements.

I've listened to this and other Dennis Brain recordings for over fifty years now and compared to many others. Notice in this (and especially his Strauss horn concerto performances) how he tends to play with the orchestra instead of on top of it like so many others. Sometimes almost playfully.

Isn't the Rondo similar to the Rondo from Mozart's Divertimento No 17?

@Gabriel Fauré all the mozart horn concerto rondo's are so similar lol
Gabriel Fauré
I thought it sounded virtually the same as the rondo from his 4th horn concerto but you’re not wrong
Arturo’s Michelangeli
Karajan destroys the rhythm. I wouldn’t blame it on Brain, even though he does rush. It was just like Karajan to take Mozart to the stage without rehearsal and without commitment. I don’t believe he understood classical style and I don’t believe he cared for it.
Imagine you’re a horn virtuoso playing this hack reading of this brilliant, joyful concerto. But K. was so famous, so dominant, berühmt and influential, he never heard the word “no” from anyone he worked with. And everyone just seemed to think it was JUST FINE! It makes me wonder how many people in the classical music world have any independent judgment about the music.
Of course Von Karajan did not get everything wrong, and of course Dennis Brain was a wonderful horn magician! I just wish that K had left Mozart alone if he didn’t love it and didn’t think it needed inspirational rehearsals and performances. Some of these are lovely, so we know he could!
